Position Responsibilities: 

    

The primary responsibility of the Field Services Travelling Technician is to perform major component exchanges to include catastrophic failed and traditionally failed components, perform internal and external composite repairs, perform up tower repairs on failed components, and perform return to service work during site support and standalone taskings including LOTO and basic troubleshooting on major wind OEM platforms throughout N. America. Set the industry standard in innovative ways developing and performing complex major component exchanges along with advanced composite and up tower repairs. Apply advanced troubleshooting methods during major wind OEM platform site support.

  • Travel extensively with little or no notice to customer wind farm sites.
  • Deliver a “safety-first” mindset with quality workmanship at an efficient work pace.
  • OEM experience for controls interface and troubleshooting. Multiple OEMs a plus.
  • Qualified with an ability to read schematics to build and perform LOTO procedures.
  • Perform fixed rotor gearbox exchanges on multiple OEM turbines. Self-hoisting crane experience and certifications a plus.
  • Perform single blade exchanges using a two-crane or gripper pick method.
  • Perform rotor drop and 12 o’clock methods for pitch bearing exchanges.
  • Perform traditional gearbox, generator, generator frames, slew ring, main shaft main bearing, yaw drive, pitch drive, machine head, nacelle enclosure and tower section exchanges.
  • Perform catastrophic failed exchanges on blades, gearboxes, main bearings, bedframes, hubs with associated skins and nacelle enclosures.
  • Tower teardown to include catastrophic failure and complete tower erection.
  • Proficient in crane signaling and industry approved rigging practices: NCCCO Riggers1/Signal person preferred. NCCCO Riggers 2 a plus.
  • Experience with multiple composite repair types to include lightning damage, blade tip and root, internal, sheer web, carbon blade, and external composite repairs.
  • Perform composite blade damage assessments.
  • Perform internal and external composite repairs.
  • Work in confined space areas to include internal wind turbine blades.
  • Ability to identify various composite chemicals, repair materials, and mixing ratios.
  • Ability to read and comprehend lamination schedules.
  • Proficient with grinder, sander, and other composite tooling.
  • Proficient setting up and using open flame torches to separate bearings and gears.
  • Have extensive knowledge and experience changing high speed and intermediate bearings on multiple OEM platforms as well as Mega Watt classes.
  • Proficient measuring OD of bearing bores and capable of measuring bearing seats.
  • Ability to perform failure analysis on bearings and gears.
  • Ability to determine proper bearings for the application based off nomenclature.
  • Borescope inspections: ability to inspect, document and produce quality reports.
  • Proficient in the use and operation of multiple brands of electrical testers to include winding analyzers, meggers, DLO testers, turn to turn ratio analyzers, hi pot testers, IR testers.
  • Proficient in electrical brazing, tying, and wrapping and insulation techniques for motors and generators.
  • Perform drive end and non-drive end bearing exchanges, re-leads, wye ring repairs and testing on various generator models.
  • Machining experience with boring, resurfacing, stud extraction and helical replacement a plus.
  • Understand and follow crane lift plans.
  • Perform daily site technician duties to include but not limited to: LOTO, all stages of maintenance, component exchanges, basic and advanced troubleshooting, and turbine analysis.
  • Inspect and operate support equipment to include all-terrain forklift and aerial lift.
  • Initiate and perform high competency tasks as well as follow defined instructions, schedules and update automated “Plan of Day”.
  • Perform installation tasks and have a high proficiency in torquing, tensioning, calibration, and use of hydraulic, power, and hand tools.
  • Well versed in reading and understanding gearbox and generator drawings.
  • Read and comprehend schematics, work instructions and safety protocols.
  • Interface with customers relaying interactions to their leadership teams as needed.

Education:

  • High School Diploma
  • GED

Position Requirements:

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States now and in the future without company sponsorship.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with composite materials in any industry.
  • Technical Certification for composite repair a plus.
  • OEM site troubleshooting and maintenance experience preferred.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision when given adequate instructions.
  • Ability to work well with others in teams of 2 to 8 and produce quality results.
  • Must have customer service focused attitude and excellent communication skills.
  • Able to lift/carry materials that are an average weight of (35) pounds and up to (70) pounds 8 to 10 hours daily, from waist, shoulder or even above shoulder.
  • Must be comfortable working at heights (260 feet or more) and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to meet OSHA weight requirements for ladder climbing of 250 to 300 pounds, determined by considering the total weight limits of ladders and rigging harnesses including equipment and tools, as well as the combined weight of any two climbers in a potential rescue situation.
  • Able to tolerate exposure to weather (ranging from hot, cold, rain, sun, snow) up to 8 to 10 hours daily.
  • Other duties as assigned.
