Minimum Qualifications: 

Master's degree in educational administration

SC certification in secondary administration

Graduate work in administration, curriculum planning and implementation, teacher evaluation and supervision

Skill in interpersonal relations with students, parents, teacher, staff and the general public

Skill in applying accepted administrative methods/techniques

Strong interest in high school students and programs

Skill in supervision/coordination of instructional programs

Skill in evaluation and improvement of teaching effectiveness

Skill in problem analysis and resolution

Skill in budget development and implementation

Successful experience with increasing student achievement

Successful experience in matters related to student discipline

Successful teaching experience

Skill in oral and written communication

Five years of progressively responsible experience

Outstanding references

Satisfactory SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) Report

 

Salary Range:    Administrative 

 
Length of Contract:  12 months

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

 

Purpose Statement

The job of High School Principal is done for the purpose/s of providing leadership and management to a high school with a primary focus on improving student achievement. The High School Principal is responsible for maintaining overall site operations; receiving, distributing, and communicating information to enforce school, district, and state policies; maintaining the safety of the school environment; coordinating school activities; communicating information to staff; and addressing situations, problems and/or conflicts that could negatively impact the school. 

 

This job reports to the Superintendent.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates methods required to perform assignments for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Provides instructional leadership focused on current research and best practices in order to continually increase student achievement.
  • Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Monitors student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of providing for the safety and welfare of students.
  • Guides the school leadership team to effect school improvement though the development and revision of the strategic improvement plan.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies.
  • Represents the school within community forums for the purpose of maintaining ongoing community support for educational goals and/or assisting with issues related to the school environment.
  • Supervises school personnel for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing for professional growth, and achieving the overall objectives of the school's curriculum.
  • Leads the development and alignment of the school, instructional model and evaluation strategies for the purpose of expanding and implementing teaching and learning.
  • Manages school administrative functions (e.g. facility maintenance, budget, staffing, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining safe and efficient school operations within district guidelines.
  • Implements policies, procedures and/or processes for the purpose of providing direction and/or complying with mandated requirements.
  • Facilitates the development, communication implementation and evaluation of quality learning for the purpose of enhancing excellence, equality and equity for staff and students.
  • Chairs meetings (e.g. curriculum, safety, site advisory, special district committees, etc.) for the purpose of coordinating activities and ensuring that outcomes achieve school, district and/or state objectives.
  • Delegates responsibility for a variety of administrative functions to Assistant Principal and other personnel for the purpose of managing the workload more efficiently.
  • Composes a wide variety of materials (e.g. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Evaluates assigned personnel for the purpose of ensuring that standards are achieved, and performance is maximized.
  • Facilitates communication between personnel, students and/or parents for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems and/or resolving conflicts.
  • Presents information (e.g. budget overviews, accounting processes, distribution formulas, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
  • Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

 

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: planning and managing people and projects; using pertinent software applications; implementing instructional programs at the high school level.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.  Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: laws and regulations relating to education; concepts of management and supervision

 

ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize specific, job-related equipment.  In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.   Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem-solving with equipment is limited.  Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions.

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; managing multiple departments; and supervising the use of funds.  Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the Organization’s services.

 

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 25% sitting, 40% walking, and 35% standing.  The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and a generally hazard free environment.
