DESCRIPTION: The high school Social Studies instructor has the skills to provide instruction in high school to college level courses. A thorough understanding of the performance expectations will be demonstrated through explicit instruction using a variety of instructional techniques to reach all students. The instructor will regularly use formative assessments to make instructional decisions for lesson planning and instructional delivery. This is critical to student engagement and achievement. Providing alternative and creative methods to assure student achievement is necessary. Demonstrating solid classroom management is expected. Working alongside staff in a professional learning community is crucial to continued student achievement and the implementation of the adopted district curriculum.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate 4-12 Social Studies, Civics, or comparable endorsement required
- Proficient in centering instruction on high expectations for student achievement
- Proficient in effective teaching practices
- Proficient in recognizing individual student learning needs and developing strategies to address those needs
- Proficient in providing clear and intentional focus on subject matter content and curriculum
- Proficient in fostering and managing a safe, positive learning environment
- Proficient in using multiple data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning
- Proficient in communicating and collaborating with parents and the school community
- Proficient in exhibiting collaborative and collegial practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning
- Proficient in setting and achieving student learning goals consistent with instructional standards
- Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities, or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population
- Skill and ability to utilize technology to aid instruction, assessment and learning
- Willingness and ability to include special education and/or ELL students
- High level of energy and enthusiasm for high school students and staff
- Demonstrated flexible and a positive attitude

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach Social Studies at the high school level
- Follow the district-adopted curriculum.
- Implement performance expectation in classes
- Contribute as part of a professional learning community within the department for application of Social Studies concepts
- Remain current and share best Social Studies instruction practices and research
- Assess student work and implement instructional strategies to help students achieve within classes
- Work closely with parents: regularly update grades and communicate student achievement academically and behaviorally
- Analyze student data to assist with determination of current and future courses
- Within the high school environment provide supervisory or coaching assistance
- Perform other job related duties as assigned by supervisor
- Improve test scores of all students
- Develop an assessment system
- Work cooperatively to develop an effective instructional team
- Help develop parent involvement in the high schools
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Working area will be in a regular classroom. The schedule may include US History, CWP, World History, College in the High School courses, and history electives, along with a career pathways advisory. Provide instruction in any of the currently offered and anticipated Social Studies courses. Provide remedial instruction to students who demonstrate that need. Maintain inventory and curriculum assigned to the Social Studies department. Provide programming within budgetary constraints. Teaching assignment will be determined on an annual basis by the building principal.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.
The employee may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
