Job Summary:
Paideia is an independent, progressive pre-K through 12 college-preparatory school in the Emory University area of Atlanta. The High School enrolls approximately 465 students. The curriculum consists of extensive offerings in English, social sciences, mathematics, foreign languages, natural and physical sciences, art, and music. Class size averages 15 students.
Full-time High School teachers teach four classes. The High School visual art department offers a full range of subjects. Students coming into 9th grade for 2D art typically take beginning drawing and painting. They then advance to another of subjects: printmaking, advanced drawing and painting, and during their senior year can take a portfolio development course to prepare for either full portfolios or supplements for college. The art department also offers a full range of courses in photography, small metals, ceramics and digital design. We have a full range of art students - some who enjoy it as their elective and others who hope to pursue it in higher education. The art curriculum is designed for all students interested in art to engage fully.
This position would include teaching 4 sections of art classes. Depending on a candidate’s background, it could include teaching 9th grade classes of beginning drawing and painting and more advanced 2D visual art work in printmaking, advanced drawing and painting and the opportunity to work with students in creating a portfolio. Teachers have the opportunity to create upper level elective courses which could be in ceramics, other 3D mediums, and digital design.
Required Skills / Abilities:
We are looking for someone who has a strong art background, practices with a variety of instruction methods, and a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience. While a college degree in a related field is required, a master’s is preferred. Experience working with both 2D and 3D mediums is preferred with the flexibility to teach both.
Important personal qualities include a love of learning, interest in and demonstrated ability to teach and support adolescents, an engaging teaching style, flexibility, organizational skill, energy, collegiality, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to teaching responsibilities in both long terms and short terms, faculty have an advisory group of 10-12 students. Faculty members are required to attend weekly faculty meetings, participate in professional development training, support student programming days and events, and a list of things that can come up in the day in the life of a teacher.
