Job Description
- Under minimal supervision, performs work involving supervising the activities associated with the design, estimating, and job order development of the Power & Light Department's electrical distribution system.
- Position oversees the development and maintenance of the Distribution Engineering practices, processes and procedures as well as all approved materials used.
- Supervises and monitors the activities of distribution planning personnel.
- Performs administrative tasks and supervises distribution planning personnel.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of long-range plans for Power & Light's distribution system.
- Assists Power Engineering Manager with coordination of distribution activities with respect to functions of other City Departments including Municipal Services and Community Development.
- Duties include the establishment of goals and strategies for implementation of system expansion and improvements related to distribution engineering operations and projects.
- Prepares annual operation and capital budgets for the distribution system group.
- Will review and approve all related engineering and planning activities associated with the development and implementation of construction and material standards used in the design and operation of utility distribution engineering systems.
- Responsible for the review and approval of project concepts/drawings assigned to subordinate staff and monitors progress, reviewing and approving completed projects.
- Duties include the design of special projects beyond routine expertise of subordinate staff.
- Will confer with management, consulting firms, regulating agencies, special interest groups, neighboring cities, and other members of the community to keep abreast of issues that may impact how and when engineering related problems should be addressed.
- Duties include making presentations to division employees regarding system updates and specifications and attending staff meetings.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in Electrical Engineering or related technical field and a minimum of eight years progressively responsible professional engineering and supervisory experience; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Professional Engineer (PE) is required.
- Valid certificate in Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) is required.
- Must possess a Valid Driver's License.
- Requires knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code, National Electric Code, and principles of advanced theories of engineering.
- Must be skilled in basic budgetary practices, administrative principles, project management, and computer usage.
- Requires effective written and oral communication skills, ability to deliver effective presentations and the ability to exercise authority over assigned work function.
- Must be able to creatively problem solve and conduct research, summarizing a variety of informational and statistical data.
- Requires good organizational skills, ability to meet established deadlines, and ability to motivate staff.
- Must have knowledge of computation and analysis, including trigonometry, geometry, algebra, and elementary calculus. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire.
- Physical Demands: While performing the essential functions of this job the incumbent is regularly required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; reach with hands and arms; and use hands to finger, handle or feel.
- Working Conditions: Normal office environment, with regular exposure to outdoor weather condition; while performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is occasionally exposed to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of machinery and electrical shock.
