The Lead Food Services Specialist assures the care and good health of all students residing at Highfields by seeing that they receive nutritional balanced meals daily and assures the kitchen adheres to all health department and Michigan Department of Education (MDE) regulations.
**Requires decision making for administering menus, purchasing, meeting and maintaining licensing guidelines as well as operational supervision of kitchen processes.
Education / Certifications:
- Minimum of a high school diploma.
- ServSafe Certification required (Must obtain within 6 months. We would help you obtain this)
- Completion of Michigan Department of Education School Meals Overview Workshop
Minimum Qualifications / Experience:
- Must have a minimum of two years of progressive experience in providing food services in an institution or comparable setting.
- Knowledge of MDE (MI Department of Education) standards and menu planning experience desired
- Experience in, or the demonstrated to ability to plan, prepare and serve meals for large groups of people.
- Must possess basic computer skills at a minimum.
- Shall be person of good character who possesses the health, emotional stability, maturity and strength to carry out assigned duties.
- Must be able to work well independently and as part of a team
Knowledge or Experience:
· Providing food services according to Child Food and Nutrition requirements.
· Practicing health, fire and safety code regulations.
· Providing food services for large of groups of consumers.
**You will be required to complete a pre-employment physical, drug test (to include marijuana) and TB Skin test.
Essential Functions:
· Oversee the adherence of the local health department regulations and policies.
· Oversee the adherence of the State and Federal Child Food and Nutrition guidelines.
· Prepare nutritious meals for Highfields’ students and others served on the Onondaga campus.
· Ensure food preparation is completed in accordance with prescribed menus meeting established food and nutrition regulations.
· Under the guidance of the Operations Manager, help to develop an annual agency food budget which, upon approval, serves as the basis to order or purchase all foodstuffs necessary to implement approved menus, purchase any kitchen supplies or equipment, and plan and prepare for all special functions.
· Interact directly with approved vendors and sales representatives in order to assist in determining and purchasing the best, most economical products for use in the kitchen.
· Supervise, run and maintain all kitchen operations and assigned students during assigned shift including:
o Cleanliness of equipment Storage and pantries
o Salad bars
o Dining hall services
o Special meals and events Kitchen aides
· Maintains good communication and teamwork with all food services staff so that high standards are consistently observed at all meals.
· Provide a warm, caring, disciplined environment for students thereby contributing to the overall purposes of the agency.
· Demonstrate flexibility to meet special health needs or scheduling problems.
· Openly and fully advise the Operations Manager of the conditions, needs and operations of the kitchen.
· Assist in writing and maintaining the menu.
· Perform other duties assigned.
