What are the responsibilities and job description for the SSS Academic Specialist position at Highland Commmunity College?
SUMMARY
This grant-funded position provides academic/learning assistance to Student Support Services participants in general education courses and study skills. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required. Hours of work will vary depending upon need, but typically do not exceed 15 hours per week. Position available when school starts in August and through finals in May.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Develop and conduct individualized instructional modules and other related activities that precisely respond to participants' unique deficiencies as determined by student need/counselor/director.
2. Deliver instruction in basic general education skills courses.
3. Assist in any and all Project reports and evaluations as appropriate.
4. Prepare articles for SSS newsletter.
5. Supervise and assist in development of instruction skills modules.
6. Work with SSS Retention/Tutoring Coordinator.
7. Communicate with faculty in regards to students' needs and progress.
8. Conduct or assist with workshops for students within the SSS program.
9. Utilize web resources and additional materials as needed to address students' learning needs.
10. Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree in Education or core academic subject, i.e. mathematics, science, business, etc., and one year of instructional experience required. Master's degree and four years relevant teaching experience preferred. Demonstrated expertise and success in teaching developmental program context desired. Experience in the following areas desired: higher education; with students with remedial education needs; with non-traditional students; with TRIO programs.
Language Skills
Strong oral and written communication skills required. Ability to read, analyze and interpret most complex documents. Ability to convey information to students in various ways to accommodate various learning styles.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
