Position Overview
The Highland County Board of Supervisors is seeking a Part-Time County Attorney to join their team in Monterey, Virginia. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced attorney to provide expert legal advice and guidance to the county government.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel to the Highland County Board of Supervisors on various matters, including solid waste removal, budgetary issues, and more
- Advise constitutional officers on county ordinances and other matters
- Assist the Building and Zoning Administrator, Planning Commission, and Board of Zoning Appeals with legal matters related to the Highland County Zoning Ordinance
- Develop and implement county policies, ordinances, easements, deeds, leases, and legal memoranda
- Review contracts submitted to the county and constitutional officers and prepare reports on those reviews
- Attend regular meetings of the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, and Board of Zoning Appeals
- Negotiate leases, contracts, deeds, and easements on behalf of the county
- Represent the county in court proceedings as necessary
- Collect and sue for delinquent enterprise fees and EMS fees
- Advise the County Registrar on voting matters as needed
- Sell delinquent tax properties
Requirements
- Current Virginia Bar license
- Five or more years of experience in local government law
- Strong writing skills and ability to write in plain English
- Prior experience in zoning matters is a plus
- Ability to understand complex legal issues and explain them to non-attorneys
- Pass pre-employment criminal and credit background checks
