Lead Laboratory Technologist (Microbiology, Chemistry, Reference Lab, Phlebotomy)

Job Duties: The Lead Laboratory performs various chemical, microscopic and microbiological tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. He/she draws blood and receives or obtains various specimens for laboratory analysis. He/she reports laboratory test results and may be engaged in teaching. He/she will effectively communicate with and interact with all laboratory personnel, physicians, patients and other allied health professionals. In addition, he/she will assist the Laboratory Manager as directed. This may include special team projects throughout the hospital, quality control issues, department scheduling, payroll, personnel problems, compliance duties, performance evaluations, manual review, procedure writing, assisting the Pathologist, and supervision of staff. The manager will direct Lead Techs as to what duties/areas he/she is to be responsible.

Job Accountabilities:
- Supports Highland District Hospital’s mission to serve the community by providing accessible, efficient, quality health care in an atmosphere of compassion and excellence.
- The Lead Tech has the education and experience to perform routine laboratory procedures efficiently and independently and to have the judgment necessary to consult the Laboratory manager or Medical Director when an unsolved problem would compromise patient care.
- Is qualified and therefore may be asked to assume general supervisor responsibilities if requested and may be asked to assist in a teaching and/or evaluating capacity if requested.
- Is expected to actively initiate action and participation in his/her continuing education program, including HCFA and OIG mandates as well as demonstrating a consistent, reliable attendance pattern.
- Is required to be knowledgeable of safety standards and practices as mandated by OSHA, CLIA, TJC, CAP.
- Responsible for Microbiology, Ref. Lab, Serology, Chemistry, SP/Chemistry, and Phlebotomy.
- Follow laboratory and hospital policies relating to obtaining and receiving specimens.
- Assure that maintenance of equipment is done on a scheduled basis.
- Answers the phone in a polite, friendly and helpful manner.
- Support laboratory and hospital policies relating to safety, attendance, continuous quality improvement and confidentiality and help ensure they are followed.

Education – Required: An Associates degree in Medical Technology AND evidence of having passed a registry examination administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists; OR have been grandfathered in by CLIA standards as General Supervisor, (due to length of service in the Laboratory).
Experience Required: 5 years or more as a technologist in a clinical laboratory setting.
Supervises: Laboratory Staff under the direction of the Laboratory Manager
Physical Demands: The position requires corrected vision and color perception, and the use of two hands. Light lifting (up to 25 pounds), and considerable standing and walking will be required. The Lead Laboratory Technologist must be physically and emotionally able to handle irregular hours with minimal absences. The position requires the employee to be free of all unlawful substances and alcohol. The position requires successful completion of a medical examination after office of employment has been made.
Work Environment: The position requires a tolerance of a stressful work environment and the ability to follow and direct oral and written instructions. The position may receive exposure to blood borne pathogens and occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements. Emergency and crisis situations are often present.
Work Schedule: The Lead Technologist may be required to work first, second or third shift of eight (8) or more hours, including weekends and holidays, based on the needs of the department. Must be willing to work according to hospital needs.
