Position Summary
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the daily and long-range operational aspects of the laboratory. The manager must keep Standards of Operations that will meet any and all accrediting agency requirements. Responsibility includes initiation and implementation of departmental policies and procedures, day-to-day operation of the laboratory, evaluations of quality control results and resolving of any and all problems that may arise. The manager is also responsible for the hiring of new employees and their training as well as maintaining high standards of knowledge and practice of current employees.

Position Accountabilities
  • Actively supports Highland District Hospital’s mission to serve the community by providing accessible, efficient, quality health care in an atmosphere of compassion and excellence.
  • Has to assess and resolve all technical problems when unsolved problems would compromise patient care. In the absence of the Pathologist, the manager will be responsible for the operation of the laboratory.
  • Will actively initiate action and participate in his/her continuing education program and demonstrate a consistent, reliable attendance pattern.
  • Maintains all legal and regulatory licensure/documentation required by CLIA, OSHA, AABB, TJC, CAP and State agencies.
  • Assures quality through developing and monitoring patient outcomes.
  • Responsible for the Departmental budget and the efficient operation of the Department.
  • Responsible for management and decision making, including policies and procedures relative to ongoing and long-range operational factors are followed.
  • Markets Laboratory services to physicians and community.

Position Qualifications

Education – Required: A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a physical, chemical or biological science AND; evidence of having passed a registry examination at the technologist’s level administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Minimum Experience: At least five years of supervisory experience in a Laboratory setting is required.

Competencies Required: The manager will actively initiate action and participate in his/her continuing education program and demonstrate a consistent, reliable attendance pattern. He/she is required to be knowledgeable of safety standards and practices as mandated by OSHA, CLIA, TJC, CAP. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
