About the Job:

The Assistant Director of Clinical Services is responsible for the day-to-day effective delivery of clinical patient care in non-nursing clinical departments. Oversees and directs the care of the patients and ensures clinical staff are competent and are providing quality care. Assesses the patient’s clinical needs and develops high quality treatment programs to meet the needs. Assists with strategic planning, program development, staff supervision and fiscal planning. Ensures compliance with clinical patient care standards, regulatory requirements and established policies and procedures

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements treatment plans ensuring appropriate assessments for all patients served. Implements best practice and emerging practice protocols.
  • Conducts Psychosocial Assessments within 72 hours of patients’ admission and prior to Treatment Plan development and ensures other Therapists do as well.
  • Attends all Acute Treatment Team meetings and ensures the active participation of clinical staff.
  • Conducts daily therapy groups and documents group progress notes prior to leaving the facility and ensures the clinical staff meet this requirement.
  • Conducts at least weekly individual therapy sessions with all patients and ensures the clinical staff meet this requirement
  • Conducts family therapy sessions with involved family at the frequency indicated in each patient’s treatment plan and ensures the clinical staff meet this requirement
  • Participate in weekend group therapy rotation as needed to guarantee coverage.
  • Reviews the progress, quality, and effectiveness of clinical programs. Continually assesses the quality of the clinical care and services; and implements changes with approval.
  • Provides support and instruction as needed to direct care staff to ensure they adequately understand the treatment program and service delivery expectations to patients based on the patients’ individual treatment plans and clinical needs.
  • Ensures that all clinical programming, staffing, and documentation is in accordance with regulatory agencies and standards of care. Ensures that all programming is clinically relevant and appropriate to patient needs.
  • Provides clinical consultation, oversight of case planning and care coordination.
  • Monitors staff schedules to ensure that appropriate staffing levels are available to facilitate care in a timely manner.
  • Ensures all clinical staff conduct individual, family and collateral contacts and document all contacts in the medical record.
  • Monitors and reviews discharge plans and after-care for patients by the clinical staff. Ensures that they are arranged and appropriate.
  • Reviews and audits charts for documentation – both quality and completeness. Reviews caseloads regularly to ensure appropriate utilization of services.
  • Assists in staff supervision including hiring, orienting, performance assessment and management, motivating, training, scheduling, and coaching to meet department goals and ensure effective and efficient department operation.
  • Develops and implements appropriate therapeutic activities and/or programs.
  • Applies de-escalation techniques to help manage patient’s emotions, behavior and participation in treatment and assists with seclusion and restraint when necessary.
  • Presents appropriate patient information to the treatment team; participates in team discussion and evaluation of patient goals, objectives and motivations.
  • Provides onsite coverage for other programs when needed and may provide training, case consultation and on call coverage during and after program hours as needed.
  • Maintains a patient caseload as needed.

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited school in clinical, psychology or social service related field.
  • Three or more years’ clinical experience in a health or human service agency required.
  • One or more years working directly with the facility patient population required.
  • One or more years’ supervisory/management experience required, preferably in social/clinical services.
  • Skills in therapy and assessment, considerable knowledge of social work principles and practice, social health and welfare programs and laws governing eligibility for these programs; regulatory standards.
  • Licensed counselor/social worker/psychologist preferred or as required by the state and for the area of clinical expertise.
  • CPR and de-escalation and restraint certification required (training available upon hire and offered by facility).
