First Assistant Superintendent
Department/Division: Grounds
Reports To: Golf Course Superintendent
Supervises Directly: Grounds & Greens Maintenance Staff
FLSA Status: Salaried With Bonus and paid moving expenses
Purpose for the Position:
Under the superintendent's supervision, the First Assistant Superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; other related work as required. The First Assistant Superintendent may serve in the Golf Course Superintendent's capacity during his/her absence.
Essential Responsibilities:
1. Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways.
2. Schedules work; supervises employees and the use of the equipment.
3. Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.
4. Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates application equipment.
5. Calibrates pesticide application equipment.
6. Participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps.
7. Supervises and participates in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
8. Assists in personnel management and evaluation.
9. Employee safety and personnel discipline.
10. Maintains records associated with the grounds & greens maintenance operation.
11. Oversees the employee training program.
12. Safety Officer attends monthly safety meetings.
Education and Qualifications:
Valid Missouri driver’s license
Current state certification as a pesticide applicator or the ability to secure one within 90 days of employment
1-2 years Golf Course supervisory experience
Skills and Abilities:
Have computer skills to include word processing, spreadsheet, and familiarity with brand specific property Management System(s).
· Exercise excellent communication, presentation, organization and listening skills.
· Operate with a high level of autonomy.
· Progressively responsible experience in golf course maintenance or related field.
· Proficient knowledge of rules of golf, etiquette, and methods of play.
· Proficient knowledge of tools and equipment used in golf maintenance and grounds keeping practices.
· Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees.
· Characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials.
· Drainage control methods; and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.
· Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment.
· Prepare clear and concise reports.
· Maintain effective employee and public relations.
· Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
Physical Demands:
Ability to exert up to 25-100 pounds of force occasionally
Ability to frequently lift 10-50 lbs., carry, push, or pull, or otherwise move objects
Ability to frequently stand for brief periods of time
Ability to walk, stoop, bend and reach above head frequently
Environmental Conditions:
Inside: Dusts, allergens, chemical vapors both organic and inorganic and requires the use of personal protective
equipment to minimize exposure to hazards.
Outside: Noise and vibration from equipment used in a golf course maintenance operation.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
