Job Title: Recreation Leader, After School Program 

Classification Title: Hourly-Non-Exempt

Status: Part-Time

Department: After School Program (ASP)

Supervisor: K-8 Child Care Director

Primary Location: Social Room, Playground, Gym, Sports Court, In-Crowd

The Highlands Recreation District operates under the Community Services District law pursuant to the government code 61000 et seq, for the purpose of providing recreational services within the District. Services are provided under the leadership and direction of an elected Board of Directors. The Highlands Recreation District maintains facilities including the Recreation Center, Early Education Center, After School Center, Tennis Courts, Pool, and Playgrounds in addition to a variety of programs, services, and annual special events.

Job Summary 

The Recreation Leader supervises activities or play areas to ensure a safe and fun environment for the after-school children. The Recreation Leader will participate and proactively engage in the daily structure and curriculum of the after-school program and seasonal camps while supporting the Highlands Recreation District and surrounding community. This position reports to the K-8 Child Care Director and receives general directions from the ASP Coordinator. 

Essential Functions and Tasks

? Supervise and/or facilitate curriculum activities or areas to provide a positive experience for the program children. 

? Maintain appropriate standards for children’s behavior using non-punitive methods which teach self-discipline while supporting the child’s self esteem. 

? Provide careful and concentrated supervision of play areas to ensure the children’s safety. 

? Assist in preparing food and snacks for the program children as assigned.

? Maintain a cooperative relationship with other staff members to create a harmonious and efficient program.

? Establish positive partnerships with program parents to navigate any issues that may affect their children.

? Assists in picking up children from school, checking children into the program, and walking children back to the center. 

? Ensure timely communication with the Director/Coordinator regarding difficult child behaviors or potential health and safety concerns. 

? Attend all staff meetings and training sessions as required. 

? Participates and assists in earthquake and fire evacuation drills.

? Assists with program cleaning and disinfecting as assigned. 

? Performs basic first aid.

Requirements

  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s) 

? Must be flexible and able to maintain a positive and supportive working relationship with staff, parents, volunteers, and children.

? Must be able to effectively relay/manage confidential information regarding children’s health, safety, or behavior.

? Must have knowledge of curriculum planning which includes but is not limited to indoor and outdoor activities relevant to school age children.

? Ability to organize tasks and work as a team.

? Ability to solve conflicts with children to create a positive path forward.

? Strong verbal communication skills.

? Must maintain a professional attitude. 

? Must be able to work Monday-Friday during business hours as well as nights and weekends as needed.

Required Qualifications 

· Must be 18 years or older per California state licensing regulations, title 22. 

· Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

· Department of Justice fingerprint clearance. 

· Successfully pass health screening. 

Preferred Qualifications

· Prefer prior experience working with school-age children.

· Child CPR and first aid certified. 

· Valid mandated reporter certificate. 

· 12 college units that cover the general areas of child growth and development which may include recreation, physical education, human services, early childhood education, or units toward a school-age teaching credential.

Physical Demands and Work Environment 

1. The position works in both indoor and outdoor environments, subject to severe hot, cold, and inclement weather. The physical demands of this position are described below.

1. Sitting, walking, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot).

2. Fall (slip, trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional walking and playing surfaces. 

3. Heat illness/temperature extremes that result in heat stress, exhaustion, or metabolic slowdown such as hypothermia.

4. Chemical exposure – absorption through the skin, inhalation, or through the bloodstream that may cause illness, disease, or death.

5. Lifting and carrying, often 10-25lbs, frequently 26-50lbs, occasionally 50-75 lbs.

6. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.

Minimum Hourly or Salary: $20.00 - Maximum Hourly Salary: $23.00 

? This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders. 

? In general, the position works on a schedule based on the business needs and may require early morning, evening, and weekend work.

? May work up to, but not in excess of 40 hours per week (among all concurrent positions).

Benefits

This position is employed through the Highlands Recreation District which offers employees of this classification to receive: paid sick time, and Simple IRA retirement account participation with up to a 3% District match (if employee makes more than $5,000 in a year), in addition a 457(b) Retirement with District contributions of $20/month and employee discounts in accordance with Highlands Recreation District Employee Handbook.

Required Staff Training 

Prior and during hiring process, all employees are required to complete the following compliance online training sessions through Paylocity. Employees will be enrolled in the training soon after their appointment is processed and will be notified via email from the HR department.

Background Check and Fingerprinting

Employees are required to undergo and complete a successful background check that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records for employment. Candidates for positions where the employee will come in regular contact with minors will be required to be fingerprinted. This policy includes emergency hires and may also be applicable to volunteers depending on the work they will be doing. 

In some cases, a background check will include a Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a check of licenses and certificates when applicable.
 

California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act 

All childcare workers are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Department of Social Services, Child Care Licensing.
