As a member of the Department of Public Safety, the Campus Security Officer ensures a safe and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors which is consistent with Highline College's mission and values.

This position is a temporary part-time hourly position that is limited to the earlier of 1,050 hours or 12 consecutive months beginning from the original date of hire. Per WAC 357-04-045, following 1,050 hours or 12 consecutive months, an individual is not eligible for re-employment at Highline College in another temporary part-time hourly position.

Pay & Work Schedule
Pay rate: $22.98 per hour. 
Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 4pm - 8pm
Providing Campus Security to The Hub at Federal Way location

About The Hub: Through a partnership with Highline College, the University of Washington Tacoma, the City of Federal Way and Federal Way Public Schools, The Hub provides access to post-secondary and adult education to the Federal Way community.
The successful candidate is expected to work up to 16 hours per week. This position is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. 

Reporting to the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management, the Campus Security Officer will:
  • Patrol college facilities and grounds (by foot or patrol car) to enforce institution rules and regulations, local, state, and federal statutes and ordinances;
  • Inspect buildings and grounds for prowlers, fire, property damage, or other irregularities;
  • Direct and regulate traffic;
  • Investigate accidents or crimes which may include gathering evidence, locate and interview witnesses, and may be required to appear in court;
  • Issue citations for violations related to College regulations;
  • Respond to telephone inquiries;
  • Monitor and utilize the campus video surveillance system for the purposes of deterring and responding to incidents.
  • Respond to reports of criminal activity;
  • Dispatch foot and mobile units;
  • Operate paging system and monitor alarm systems;
  • Prepare, type and distribute reports;
  • Provide surveillance for criminal activity;
  • Assist city, county police or state patrol in case of emergencies on campus;
  • Effective, engaging communication with students, employees and visitors, consistently modeling excellent customer service, appreciation for diversity, respect and compassion;
  • Perform other duties as necessary.
Ability to:
  • Learn, interpret and enforce rules;
  • Follow written and oral instructions;
  • Address emergencies and follow appropriate course of action;
  • Write reports and investigate incidents;
  • Observe and detect suspicious situations and behavior;
  • Communicate effectively, in both oral and written form, including use of two-way radio, telephone, and in face-to-face contacts. 
  • Maintain proficiency of patrol standards, industry security standards and familiarization with department Standard Operating Procedures; 
  • Must be able to give or take direction in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Operate campus security equipment;
  • Take appropriate medical action including applying First Aid/CPR.
Knowledge of:
  • Rules governing access to campus buildings and grounds;
  • Safety precautions and fire hazards;
  • Firefighting equipment and fire prevention methods;
  • Law enforcement basics.
MINIMUM:
  • High School graduation or equivalent; AND,
  • One years of experience in police or campus security.
DESIRABLE:
  • AA Degree in police science or closely related field;
  • Trained in defensive tactics, handcuffing techniques, pepper spray techniques, and Verbal De-escalation skills;
  • Knowledge of National Incident Management System (NIMS), and Incident Command System (ICS).
