Summary:      The Accountant is a key member of the finance team and is responsible for managing the accounting operations of the Bank. This position ensures the accuracy of financial records, oversees regulatory reporting, and supports executive management with financial planning and analysis. The ideal candidate will have strong technical accounting knowledge, experience in the banking industry, and a commitment to regulatory compliance and sound financial management practices.

 

Principal Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting and Compliance

  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, including preparation and submission of Call Reports, FR Y-9, and other regulatory filings.
  • Maintain and monitor accounting policies and procedures in accordance with federal and state banking regulations.
  • Support the completion of annual audits and regulatory examinations by coordinating with external auditors and regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible for preparation and use of the bank’s profitability analysis models.
  • Preparation of the financial information needed for the annual report.

Accounting Operations Management

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable, fixed assets, accruals, prepaids and investments. Tax compliance to include Michigan Use Tax, Federal Income Tax and Federal information reporting of payments to vendors.
  • Manage the month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely financial reporting.
  • Ensure accurate recording of all financial transactions and reconciliations.

Internal Controls and Risk Management

  • Develop and maintain internal control systems to safeguard Bank assets and ensure the integrity of financial records.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and implement best practices to enhance operational efficiency and accuracy.

Strategic Planning and Budgeting

  • Assist executive management in the development and execution of the annual budget and financial forecasts.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to support strategic decision-making by senior leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Monitor variances and identify trends that impact financial performance.

  

Requirements: 

  • Minimum of 2–5 years of similar or related experience, including time spent in preparatory positions.
  • Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP, bank accounting principles, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Prior experience at a community bank or financial institution with assets between $500M and $1B.
  • Understanding of financial accounting.
  • Experience in working with leadership and management teams and team members.

Physical Requirements:
Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs.  Must be capable of climbing/descending stairs in emergency situation.  Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator.  Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary.  Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management.  Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

Working Conditions:
Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.
