The Registered Nurse in Labor & Delivery provides direct patient care to expectant mothers and newborns, performing clinical treatments, administering medication, and documenting patient care. This role involves collaboration with healthcare teams to coordinate patient care and evaluate the educational needs of patients and families.
Description:Direct Patient Care
The RN in Labor & Delivery utilizes the nursing process to provide direct patient care to patients, including those in Labor, Post Partum, and Newborn Nursery settings.
Clinical Treatments and Medication Administration
The RN performs a plan of care intervention, which includes medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, and other medical care treatments as needed.
Patient Documentation
The RN documents patient care given, ensuring accurate and thorough records of treatment.
Communication and Collaboration
The RN monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to the care team, physician, patient, and family.
Assistance with Activities of Daily Living
The RN assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
Patient Transfer and Discharge
The RN collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral, and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
Education and Advocacy
The RN evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
The RN works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.
Qualifications:Minimum Education: Associate Degree, Bachelor Degree or RN Diploma required.
Required Skills:
Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision are essential. The RN must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
American Heart Association or American Red Cross Certifications:
BLS required upon hire or must be obtained within 90 days of employment, ACLS, PALS required within 12 months of employment NRP required within 12 months of employment.
License: Current TN or Multi-State RN licensure.
Minimum Work Experience: Minimum of six months to one year experience as RN in a hospital medical/surgical setting or L&D setting preferred.
