POSITION SUMMARY

The Executive Director of Secondary Education and Athletics works in tandem with the Associate Superintendent of Educational Services and the Executive Director of Elementary Education to formulate and implement a vision of effective instruction for grades K-12 aimed at developing and sustaining the highest possible level of progressive educational programs and services. As a key member of the district’s instructional leadership team, the Executive Director of Secondary Education and Athletics cooperates with other district administrators to provide strategic direction and systemic improvement in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and other school improvement initiatives, as well as the professional development of principals, assistant principals and secondary instructional coaches. The Executive Director of Secondary Education and Athletics is an effective supervisor and mentor for secondary principals and other administrators, providing the leadership that enables them to move secondary education improvement efforts forward toward the accomplishment of district goals, and that propels them to become effective leaders of instruction in their buildings.

  • Supports the Vision, Mission and Goals of Higley Unified School District.
  • Plans, administers, and directs the division’s secondary education programs to include specialty programs, middle schools, high schools and alternative schools.
  • Involves principals in goal setting and evaluation of secondary programs, using on-site visits and multi-point data as the bases for decisions aimed at raising student achievement.
  • Formulates proposals for the development and revision of policies pertaining to secondary education programs.
  • Ensures compliance with state/federal regulations and other accreditation agencies governing secondary education programs and services.
  • Interprets secondary education programs to the Governing Board, staff, and the public.
  • Assists school principals with planning and implementing effective instructional programs to ensure that objectives for student learning are met.
  • Conferences with parents/guardians of students and resolves concerns as needed.
  • Serves as a facilitator of various instructional/special study meetings of school administrators and secondary supervisors.
  • Assists the human resources department in determining staff allocations and with interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for secondary education professional staff positions.
  • Leads the development of continual professional development for secondary education leadership.
  • Prepares or directs the preparation of reports as required by federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Facilitates interagency planning between the school division and partners in the community, in business, and in higher education, with a goal of facilitating students’ successful transition into post-secondary institutions and careers.
  • Coordinates and supervises the middle and high school summer programs.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Coordinates the purchase, inventory, and timely arrival in classrooms of all instructional materials required for teachers that support the district adoptions.
  • Prepares information and attend Governing Board meetings.
  • Works productively as a team member with the Educational Services Team, the teaching staff, classified staff, and site-based teams.
Oversees secondary athletic programs and administrators.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Masters Degree or higher
  • Valid Arizona Administrative Certification
  • Valid IVP Fingerprint Card.
  • Knowledge of current research in educational curriculum, instruction, assessment, and evaluation
  • Minimum of five years of experience in an administrative position/role; middle or high school administration preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of effective secondary education principles, practices and trends.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum, best practices in instruction and assessment, school operations and management, and leadership development.
  • Demonstrated record of success in leading strategic educational initiatives that resulted in measurable improvements in student achievement.
  • In-depth experience in the systemic implementation of progressive instructional practices.
Effective oral and written communication skills

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS : Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
