The Role

Researches, models, designs, and tests, and integrates electromechanical components and systems with an eye toward ultimate system integration.

Components may include: rotating electromagnetic machines (e.g. generators, motors, actuators), electromagnetic and/or conventional clutches gears and bearings, machinery controls (e.g. governors), mechatronics, closed-loop feedback controls, embedded process controllers, networked process controllers, as well as thermal management (e.g. forced-air, fluid, and multi-phase cooling systems), and instrumentation (e.g. torque, vibration, position, speed) of same.

Hands on hardware in the loop testing including measurement, assessment, analyses and design of experiments.

Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Masters in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering with experience in electromechanical systems, particularly power generation, power distribution, and power conditioning. In-situ testing and production environment experience a plus.

Demonstrated track record of curiosity and ownership, growing a technical skill set by actively seeking out and engaging with challenges in the field.

Strong written and oral presentation skills; ability to clearly discuss complex technical issues within their team, in cross-collaboration with partner teams including engineers from other disciplines, their internal management structure, and engineering counterparts in organizations such as external shipyards and the Navy customer.
