The Role
Researches, develops, designs, and/or tests components, equipment, systems, and networks in one or more engineering disciplines. May design equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. Applies engineering principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
This position if for a Project Engineer 5 to head a Special Emphasis Programs (SEP) (SUBSAFE/FBW/DSS-SOC) certification team for Certifying VCS New Construction, Columbia New Construction, VCS PSA, Sub Fleet Support and AIT availabilities. Additionally, when not in a certification event or Certification Audit, to assist with all manner of SEP technical issues, challenges and Continuous improvement.
Professional Engineer in any engineering discipline with an significant understanding of SEP. Understanding and wide application of technical principle, theories, and concepts in their designated field. General knowledge of other related disciplines.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
Significant understanding of the SEP certification processes to include requirements of all there SEP areas with the ability to drive the SEP certification process to completion for NNS. Works fully independently with support from O03 team. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions. Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts to include senior levels of SOSNN and NAVSEA. Represents the NNS and O03 organization in providing all the required actions in support of SUBMARINE SEP certification actions. Ability to obtain a DoD Clearance.
