The Role
Develops, analyzes, researches, and designs nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques, procedures, and applications. Uses engineering principles and NDT knowledge to specify appropriate NDT methods to support the design. Prepares technical documentation in order to implement waterfront NDT processes including specifications, analyses, standards, and restrictions. Evaluates and develops new or modifies NDT technologies to improve efficiency and effectiveness of NDT methods. Is recognized as an industry expect in NDT.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

- Welding, mechanical or materials engineering degree with NDT experience in all methods
- Advanced degree preferred
- Experience in Navy shipbuilding with experience in NDT programs qualified to TP-271 and NAVSEA 250-1500-1
- Ability to interface with Naval Reactors, NAVSEA, Supervisor of Shipbuilding and management.
- Experience negotiating specification language with the customer
- Have proven experience in applying new technology, resolving NDT problems and identifying NDT improvement opportunities
- Strong statistical analysis, root cause analysis and common cause analysis
- Have strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Be able to mentor other engineers within the department
- Considered a NDT subject matter expert in the shipbuilding industry
