Job Summary:
Supplemental Instruction (SI) student leaders lead weekly sessions who have successfully completed ENGL 1301 or MATH 1314, 1332, or 1342 with a “B” or higher. Weekly sessions will focus on course concepts, help prepare for exams and major assignments and share effective study skills that will lead to successful completion of the required core class. SI student leaders will also attend class lectures, interact with selected faculty, and attend SI staff meetings. This is a part-time, grant funded position.
Minimum Required Education:
- high school degree and a grade of B or higher in ENGL 1301, MATH 1314, MATH 1332 or MATH 1342
Essential Job Functions:
- Must attend courses on campus (HCC, JCC or BHEC) and have experience taking online classes
- Attend all class sections of designated SI assignment
- Take lecture notes at every class session including the instructor expectations and teaching and assessment methods
- Promote SI sessions during class time and encourage weekly attendance
- Conduct at least one SI session per week. Increase sessions as needed during peak times of the semester.
- Design reviews of class notes, readings, and other materials presented/used in class
- Focus on learning strategies that help students how to learn and what to learn
- Present an active learning environment during the SI sessions and engage students in collaborative activities that review course information and develops academic study skills
- Help students with note taking, test preparation, problem-solving, and test-taking strategies
- Take and report attendance at every SI session
- Meet with the course instructors as needed to review course content, SI session materials, and review feedback from SI sessions
- Submit timecards, attendance sheets of SI sessions, and session plans to the dean and SI Manager
- Attend all required SI training courses and meetings
Compensation
- $12 hour for up to 19.5 hours a week during the Spring 2025, Fall 2025, and Spring 2026 semesters
Eligibility and Application information
- Students must enroll and persist full-time enrollment status (at least 12 hours) for the semester to qualify for SI Student Leader employment
- Students must have flexibility in their schedules to attend the ENGL or MATH courses and hold SI sessions every week
- Students must have earned a “B” or higher in the course they are wanting to serve as the SI student leader
Physical Requirements:
- Light work: exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Prolonged periods of sustained posture, intense attentiveness, and walking and/or standing.
