Assistant Teacher
PURPOSE
The Assistant Teachers ensure quality programs by supporting the Lead teacher through creating an indoor and outdoor classroom environment that enhances and supports each child’s development.
PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
Hillcrest’s approach to program development is based on the following essential belief:
When children are cared for in a loving, safe environment, surrounded by positive interactions, they develop feelings of positive self-esteem based on individual strengths and accomplishments. Learning is best achieved through play and activities that are designed to offer experiences in a variety of situations, within various cultures, geared to the developmental needs of the child.
In addition, responsibilities shall include but not be limited to the following:
- Assist in planning and preparing the learning environment, setting up interest centers and preparing needed materials and supplies to ensure implementation of a developmentally appropriate program.
- Support physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and language development for children, birth through 5. Support critical aspects of brain development, including executive function, learning motivation, and life skills. Support positive interactions, relationships, and play throughout the day.
- Help with cleaning and maintaining the classroom, outdoor learning environment, and materials.
- Actively assist in the continual assessment process, with collections of observations and documentation related to each child’s development through the learning domains. Support the use of assessment-related activities in curriculum and in daily routines to facilitate authentic assessment and to make assessment an integral part of daily practice.
- Assist children with routine direct care, help children establish good habits of personal hygiene; change diapers, and assist with toilet training. Model good habits of personal hygiene. Treat all children with dignity and respect. Talk, sing, and read to children in your care frequently.
- Oversee lunch and snack preparation, following CACFP guidelines. Interact and sit with children during mealtimes.
- Develop and demonstrate positive and professional relationships with other Hillcrest staff and Hillcrest parents. Become familiar with Hillcrest’s Philosophy, Hillcrest’s Staff Handbook, and Hillcrest’s Parent Handbook.
- Maintain confidentiality about children, their families, and other employees: do not share identifiable information about people’s personal lives with anyone outside of Hillcrest. Be careful sharing information with people within Hillcrest as well.
- Attend and participate in all staff meetings, recommended training programs, and conferences in a professional manner, with the goal of improving job performance and personal skill sets.
- Protect all children from physical punishment or verbal abuse by anyone, in any program activity, and immediately report any such incident to the Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The person selected for this position shall be at least 18 years of age, show completion of High School or GED, provide three references, and must meet the requirements of the licensing agency by passing the Fingerprinting Background Check.
This person must have a warm and friendly personality, be able to relate well to children and employees, and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with Hillcrest's philosophy.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work involves standing, sitting and stooping for long durations. Must be able to go up and down stairs.
Must be able to repetitively bend or kneel to the child's eye level.
Must be able to move forty (40) pounds all directions.
Manual dexterity and visual skills required.
Auditory and verbal skills required for communication with clients, staff and the public.
Pay is dependent on SEED registry level and experience.
