Campus Engagement Rabbi

Johns Hopkins Hillel

Role Overview

Hopkins Hillel is committed to creating an inclusive and vibrant Jewish community on campus. Our students are hard-working, intelligent, and deeply committed to building a strong and pluralistic Jewish community. We are looking for a charismatic rabbi to inspire, connect, and lead alongside our thoughtful students.

We are seeking a rabbi who will shape and drive the Jewish educational vision of our Hillel. This individual will supervise the student-facing team, oversee the program, and model relationship-based engagement by meeting students daily. Our campus rabbi will be empowered to build strong relationships with key university partners, becoming a trusted presence throughout the entire university while carrying the educational vision beyond the walls of our comfortable and beautiful building. This is a unique moment for Jewish life at Hopkins. The elements to support a flourishing community dedicated to Jewish learning and innovation are all in place, and we hope to find a rabbi who can strengthen, build, and implement a strong Jewish educational vision that matches the intellectual depth of our students.

What You’ll Do

  • Student Engagement: You are first and foremost an engager. Meet students for coffee or walks on campus to build authentic relationships and to help connect students to friends, community, and experiences
  • Jewish & Israel Education: Support and lead educational programs and fellowships that deepen student engagement and experiences rooted in Jewish values.
  • Supervision: Supervise the student-facing team. Mentor and support the growth of junior staff members serving students including Springboard Fellows and IACT/Birthright professionals.
  • Shabbat & Holidays: Elevate the Jewish experiences of students on campus through attendance at weekly Shabbat Dinners while guiding three separate worship communities to lead their own services. Shape holiday experiences for students who may not seek out traditional services and other holiday observances
  • Immersive Experiences: Recruit and staff immersive travel experiences such as Birthright Israel and alternative breaks, infusing deep content and Jewish wisdom into the experiences in accessible ways.
  • Cohort Learning: Oversee and expand cohort-based learning creating multiple, diverse deep-learning communities.
  • University Relations: Attend monthly chaplaincy meetings. Build relationships with university partners in academics, Greek Life, residential life, the chaplaincy office, athletics, and graduate schools.
  • Pastoral Care: Offer emotional and spiritual support to students, providing guidance and creating a caring presence on campus.

What You’ve Accomplished

  • Rabbinic ordination and 0-2 years of experience
  • Experience in Hillel, youth movements, camping, or experiential Jewish education.
  • Proven success in community building and outreach, and previous experience in program visioning and implementation.
  • Training and/or experience in counseling, supervision, and administration.

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • A strong knowledge base of Jewish content, ranging from traditional Jewish texts to contemporary Jewish wisdom, culture, and unconventional Jewish sources.
  • Experience in leading complex conversations about Judaism and Israel in a way that is approachable and meets students at various points in their Jewish journeys.
  • A commitment to creating an inclusive, vibrant, and pluralistic Jewish community.
  • Passion for connecting with people from different backgrounds and commitment to creating an inclusive, vibrant and pluralistic Jewish community.
  • Creative problem-solving, entrepreneurial spirit, social media savviness, proactive communication, and collaboration.
  • Strong written and verbal skills, effective at communicating with a variety of stakeholders including students, parents, alumnae/i, and university partners
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

What You’ll Receive

  • Competitive salary in the non-profit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $100,000-$110,000.
  • An amazing work environment with passionate colleagues.
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, Life, AD&D and Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurances, Flexible Spending accounts, generous vacation/sick time, and parental leave.
  • Great professional development, mentoring, and skill building opportunities.
  • Travel regionally and abroad, particularly to Israel.

About Hopkins Hillel

The Hillel at Johns Hopkins University is a vibrant and pluralistic Jewish community on campus, anchored by a modern and well-equipped four story building that students call home. The building, which is one block from the main entrance to the campus, includes multiple meeting rooms, a library, offices for staff and students, a kosher kitchen and dining room, and comfortable lounge space for study, informal meetings and schmoozing. Students enjoy our beautiful facility to study, meet friends, participate in diverse programming, explore Israel and celebrate Shabbat and Jewish Holidays. There are approximately 400 Jewish students at JHU, about 7% of the undergraduate population. Jewish students are an active, dynamic part of both Hillel and the campus community. The Jewish students, like the entire student body at JHU, are motivated, thoughtful and energetic. There are many opportunities for students to become active in Jewish life through community building, culture and the arts, Israel dialogue, social justice, and religious life.
