Director of Campus Affairs and External Relations

Hillel at Stanford

Role Overview

Hillel at Stanford is looking for a passionate and creative professional to serve as our inaugural Director of Campus Affairs and External Relations. This role will focus on addressing antisemitism and anti-Israeli bias at Stanford, managing reaction to incidents and working proactively to create a better climate for the Stanford community, including Jews and Israelis, in keeping with University President Jon Levin’s vision that Stanford be a place where learning thrives. Working closely with campus Hillel staff, students, faculty, community stakeholders, and University partners, the Director of Campus Affairs and External Relations will build and sustain long-term relationships and implement a strategy to improve the climate on campus.

The ideal candidate will deeply understand today’s campus climate and have a passion for engaging University stakeholders towards a positive vision of the future. They will leverage their relationship-building expertise to work across campus and in the local Jewish community to ensure that the students and community we serve feel supported, connected to resources, and able to navigate even the most complex incidents on campus today. This is an extraordinary time that requires new ideas and new models. The right candidate will embrace this challenge with enthusiasm, and be ready to do the hard work of developing new programs and ideas alongside a broad swath of administrators and the campus community.

The Director of Campus Affairs and External Relations will report directly to Hillel’s Executive Director and work closely with the Senior Leadership team. As part of the Campus Impact Advisor program, they will receive training, support, and guidance from the Associate Vice President Campus Antisemitism Solutions at Hillel International. As part of a cohort of other Campus Impact Advisors, this role will join a cadre of professionals working together in the fight against antisemitism on college campuses across North America. This is a grant-funded position, with a horizon of at least two years.

What You’ll Do

  • Work with Stanford faculty, staff, and administrators to ensure both the residential and academic experience are fully accessible to Jewish and Israeli students. This could include assessment, training, education, and evaluation.
  • Work as a case-manager and resource in response to campus climate issues, helping students navigate Stanford’s systems, managing incident reporting/tracking/outcomes and developing longer-term strategies.  This may include taking a role in leading advocacy work or helping facilitate PR resources.
  • Work with the Hillel at Stanford program team to arrange training for student leaders and care for students navigating challenges.
  • Convene faculty, staff, parents, and students around issues of antisemitism and anti-Israeli bias to make recommendations to administration and build support networks.
  • Speak with community groups, individuals, and policymakers about strategies for preventing antisemitism on campus.
  • Collaborate with external organizations and stakeholders concerned about the campus environment, implementing a cohesive strategy.
  • Build meaningful relationships with key University staff and faculty that yield productive partnerships.
  • Regularly monitor, track, and report on antisemitism in both digital/online channels and throughout campus.
  • Write op-eds, letters, newsletters, action alerts, press releases, social media, and statements related to campus culture initiatives on behalf of Hillel at Stanford.
  • Partner internally with antisemitism focused teams within Hillel International such as Campus Climate Initiative, Israel Action and Addressing Antisemitism and Communications teams.

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years experience in college campus work, Jewish community, or community relations.
  • Proven ability to build and sustain networks of people.
  • Experience navigating complex bureaucracies, especially student and faculty governance systems.
  • Knowledge of Jewish history and culture, the characteristics of antisemitism, and Zionism and anti-Zionism.
