Role Overview

Columbia/Barnard Hillel is seeking an organized, creative self-starter to join the Columbia/Barnard Hillel team as the Senior Director of Development. The Senior Director of Development will drive a multi-pronged fundraising strategy for the Kraft Center, building meaningful relationships with stakeholders and further enhancing resources for Jewish students at Columbia University and Barnard College.

The Senior Director of Development will act as a strategic thought partner to the Executive Director, serve as a member of the Senior Staff, and lead the Development and Communications team, including the Assistant Director of Development, Development Associate, Graphic Designer, and Campus Marketing & Development Manager.

What You’ll Do

  • Oversee the strategy and implementation of our annual development plan, which will raise $2.6 million in FY25
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of donors
  • Liaise with the Columbia/Barnard Hillel Board of Directors, overseeing Board committees, content, and engagement, while also driving Board development and strategy
  • Direct family engagement efforts
  • Oversee our grants portfolio, generating high-quality proposals, narratives, applications and supporting documents 
  • Provide strategic support to the Executive Director, managing his stewardship and solicitation efforts, and ensuring that briefings are prepared in advance of meetings, events, and speaking engagements
  • Manage all strategic communications efforts, coordinating consistency of voice and message throughout all printed and digital channels including community-wide emails, digital and print appeals, major donor and Executive Director reports.
  • Be an active member of the Senior Staff, bringing perspective, opinions and leadership to the staff culture
  • Coordinate with the Director of Operations to ensure congruous record-keeping across the development and financial operations
  • Attend Hillel programs on evenings and weekends as necessary, including select Shabbat Dinners, Move In, Reunion and Summer Welcome Events

What You’ve Accomplished

  • Bachelor’s degree is required and at least 6-8 years of fundraising experience. 
  • Experience as a volunteer or professional in a Jewish organization is a plus

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • Successful track record managing multiple fundraising campaigns, one-on-one solicitation, grant writing, and reporting
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit and creativity - a willingness to try new things and innovate
  • Awareness of current trends in the Jewish community and philanthropy, with an ability to recommend and implement plans to increase donors, contributions, and identify new opportunities
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Supervisory experience, including the ability to provide constructive feedback
  • Experience working with lay leaders and managing Board committees
  • Proficiency in Office and Google suite products; experience with CRM and data management, with preferred experience in Little Green Light (LGL); comfort facilitating Zoom presentations and meetings
  • Exemplary time management skills, including the capacity to juggle competing priorities and deadlines, and to remain flexible within a fast-paced environment

What You’ll Receive

  • Competitive salary in the non-profit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $125,000 - $155,000, commensurate with experience

While more than 1,700 Jewish students are involved with Hillel, there are many students who have not found their Jewish niche on campus.
