Role Overview

Maryland Hillel is seeking a Senior Director of Development to lead and execute the organization’s fundraising strategy. This individual will direct fundraising activity for one of the nation’s most accomplished student empowerment organizations, which reaches some 5,800 Jewish students at the University of Maryland each year. Hillel enhances the lives of Jewish students so they may enrich the Jewish people and the world. By curating a diverse menu of social, leadership, religious, educational, and cultural experiences, Hillel strengthens each student’s Jewish identity in a non-prescriptive way. The organization derives most of its revenue from fundraising, and the Senior Director of Development’s success will directly impact the quality and scope of opportunities available to the students we serve.

The Senior Director of Development marshals the efforts of the board, volunteers, and professional staff to drive Hillel’s annual campaign and support the efforts of the capital campaign. Each year, Maryland Hillel raises some $1,000,000 in private philanthropy and a further $400,000-$600,000 in grants. The organization has also just surpassed $15 million towards its capital campaign goal of $23,000,000 which will realize a brand-new building.

This role requires someone with strong leadership skills, excellent organizational abilities, and the capacity to drive strategy while executing hands-on development work.

What You’ll Do

Development Strategy & Management:

  • Design and execute a comprehensive annual development plan that ensures the fiscal health of Maryland Hillel.
  • Close major gifts, manage the fundraising pipeline, and oversee all aspects of the development process.
  • Lead and complete the capital campaign, building upon the $15 million already raised toward the $23 million goal.
  • Develop and implement a moves management strategy for major donors.
  • Track and analyze fundraising performance, ensuring continuous improvement and meeting established goals.

Organizational Leadership:

  • Serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, informing overall strategy.
  • Supervise the Development Associate, ensuring their growth and productivity in support of the department’s goals.
  • Represent the organization to key stakeholders including Federations, Foundations, and University partners.

Major Gifts & Donor Cultivation:

  • Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of major donors.
  • Develop and execute individualized stewardship plans for all donors.
  • Coordinate donor portfolios for the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and volunteer solicitors.

Board & Volunteer Management:

  • Serve as the primary steward of the Board of Directors, ensuring engagement, strategic involvement, and effective governance.
  • Convene and manage the Development Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Engage parent leaders to serve on the Parent Council.
  • Support the Jewish Terrapin Alumni Network.
  • Assist in efforts to recruit and cultivate new board members.

In addition to the above responsibilities, the Senior Director of Development will have oversight over the following:

Mass Solicitation & Communication:

  • Oversee mass-solicitation strategies, leveraging direct mail, email, text messaging, social media, and targeted campaigns.
  • Plan and execute several days of giving: Giving Tuesday, Big10 Challenge, UMD Giving Day, and Hillel Global Giving Week.
  • Produce an annual report that highlights donor impact and organizational achievements.

Data & Process Management:

  • Ensure donor data and interactions are accurately captured in the Salesforce database.
  • Work with the finance team to ascertain congruous record keeping across the development and financial operations.
  • Conduct research on donor prospects and refine strategies for engagement.
  • Oversee list management for special outreach by board members, the Development Committee, and the Executive Director.

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • Bachelor’s degree required; a relevant master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of fundraising experience.
  • Successful track record managing multiple fundraising campaigns and driving strategy.
  • Ability to work independently, drive strategy, and manage up to senior leadership.
  • Experience writing and managing the organization’s grants program.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication ability.
  • Proficient in Excel and Microsoft suite.
  • Experience with CRM and data management; Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack experience is ideal.
  • Understanding of Jewish communal life, tradition, and religious practice.

  • Competitive salary in the non-profit marketplace. Salary range of $125,000-$150,000 commensurate with experience.
