Performs engineering work under the direction of a licensed Professional Engineer, investigating, evaluating, planning, computer modeling, designing, constructing, managing, or inspecting public infrastructure projects.

Min $55,744.00 annually

    Job Distinctions

    Applies standard engineering techniques to perform assigned tasks as part of a broader assignment and exercises independent judgment and discretion in writing technical reports, assigning and coordinating work assignments and using field sampling equipment.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops engineering knowledge and skills in a specific area of planning, design, or construction management; evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for public infrastructure projects; collaboratively uses judgment to determine adaptations in methods for non-routine aspects of assignments; works on projects or portions of larger projects.
  • Performs design tasks using current principles and practices of engineering; prepares project documents; develops specifications; performs computer modeling; conducts research and investigations.
  • Performs construction observation to determine compliance with specifications and approved design plans.
  • Receives instructions pertaining to specific project objectives; Addresses unconventional and complex problems and proposes solutions.
  • Assigns tasks and coordinates work of Engineering Technicians and Engineering Associates; assists in developing and analyzing project schedules and budget requirements.

  • Job Specifications

  • Knowledge of the fundamental principles and practices of engineering.
  • Knowledge of computer modeling and computer aided drafting and mapping software and applications.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of land surveying.
  • Knowledge of field testing, sampling and investigative techniques and procedures.

  • Physical Requirements

  • Frequently required to sit for long periods of time.
  • May require standing for long periods of time.

  • Work Category

  • Light work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and / or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and / or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that of sedentary work and if the worker sits most of the time, the job is considered light work.
  • Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Must be certified by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers to practice as an Engineer Intern. To be eligible to be certified as an Engineer Intern in Florida, a candidate must have earned a Board-approved bachelor's degree and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • NOTE :

  • Those hired into Tier 1 of the Engineer Intern classification must pass their FE Exam and obtain their Engineer Intern Certification within 12 months of hire, failing which the employee may be terminated for cause. Upon obtaining the Engineer Intern certificate, the employee will be promoted to Tier 2.
  • Employees in the Intern classification (Tier 2 and Tier 3) will have eight years from the date of their Engineer Intern Certification to obtain their Professional Engineer license. Failure to obtain the Professional Engineer license within this time frame shall result in reclassification of their position to an Engineering Associate (Tier 3 or Tier 4, respectively).
  • Employees in this classification (Tier2) that acquire the competencies and minimum qualifications for the next tier (Tier 3) will be able to apply for promotional opportunities through a competitive selection process. Employees will not automatically be upgraded to the next tier. Reclassifying a position is based on business need and financial impact and is not based solely on the job competencies or qualifications of the incumbent.
  • Emergency Management Responsibilities

    In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department, the County's Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency / disaster.

    Salary : $55,744 - $79,394
