Job Overview

Fleet Technician is a Three-Tiered job. Incumbents perform repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles and related equipment and provide customer service for small to medium units or functions supporting the Hillsborough County Fleet Management Department.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess entry-level knowledge of vehicle and equipment repairs, preventative maintenance, testing, and diagnostics. The candidate performs entry-level repair, maintenance, and customer service for a large repair and maintenance operation supporting the Hillsborough County Fleet Management Department. Incumbents in this classification perform the duties of the operation. The candidate will possess a minimum of graduation from High School or possession of a GED certificate.

Tier 1 - The candidate will possess a minimum of "two years" of full-time documented professional experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, or equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted.

Tier 2 - The candidate will possess a minimum of "four years" of full-time documented professional experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, or equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted.

Tier 3 - The candidate will possess a minimum of "six years" of full-time documented professional experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, or equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted.

The candidate will possess an EPA-approved Section 609 Certification within the probationary period. This position is designated as Mission Essential Group B by the Department Director meaning that the candidate must be able to report to work in support of the continuity of operations and / or emergency support functions. The candidate will possess a valid Florida Driver's License, with no more than seven points within the past 24 months, or a commercial driver's license. The candidate must possess a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake endorsement within the probationary period.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    Requirement for each tier)

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND
  • Successful completion of an approved vocational school or technical training program; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below. (For education and experience only, does not include legally required Licenses or Certifications.); AND
  • Must possess EPA approved Section 609 Certification; AND
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Tier-1 (Required Experience)

  • Two (2) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, truck, or equipment.
  • Tier-2 (Required Experience and Certification)

  • Four (4) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, truck, or equipment; AND
  • Possession of Four (4) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications from among the following test series :
  • Automobile & Light Truck Certification Tests (A1 - A9)

  • Alternate Fuels Certification Test (F1)
  • Advanced Level Test (L1, L2, L3)
  • Medium-Heavy Truck Certification Tests (T1-T8)
  • Truck Equipment Certification Tests (E1-E3)
  • Auto Maintenance and Light Repair Certification Test (G1)
  • Transit Bus Certification Tests (H1-H8)
  • School Bus Certification Tests (S1-S7)
  • Exhaust Systems (X1)
  • Military Tactical Wheeled Vehicle Certification Tests (MIL2-MIL8)
  • Tier-3 (Required Experience and Certification)

  • Six (6) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, truck, or equipment; AND
  • Possession of a Master ASE Certification in Auto / Light Truck; OR
  • Possession of a Master ASE Certification in Medium / Heavy Truck; OR
  • Possession of a Master Medium Heavy Vehicle Technician and ASE H8 (Preventive Maintenance Transit Bus) or T8 (Preventative Maintenance Medium / Heavy Truck.
  • Duties and Responsibilities

    Note : The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below :

  • Performs minor and major repairs, preventative maintenance and repair diagnostics to county vehicles and equipment to ensure they function properly and safely.
  • Diagnoses and performs minor repairs to vehicle and equipment systems, such as braking, climate control, electrical, electronic, steering and driveline to determine repair requirements.
  • Troubleshoots vehicle systems using computer interfaces and generic code scanners to obtain trouble codes from vehicle Engine Control Module (ECM).
  • Services engines, transmissions, differentials, fuel systems, braking systems, climate control systems, and hydraulic systems by changing fluids and filters, and flushing systems in accordance with manufacturers specifications.
  • Uses micrometers, calipers, pressure gauges, dial indicators and other precision instruments to determine working clearances on mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Places orders for required parts, materials and supplies, as required.
  • Inputs information into computer, database or related software to maintain records such as repair, maintenance, equipment, and customer service history.
  • Maintains tools, supplies, and workstations in a clean, safe and presentable manner.
  • Assists staff with physical inventory of equipment, parts, supplies and tools, as required.
  • Assists staff in major repairs of vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists staff in complex and non-standard retrofitting of additional accessories or equipment, in accordance with customer specifications.
  • Performs road tests and operational checks of vehicles and equipment to ensure quality of repairs and service.
  • Attends meetings, training sessions, educational courses; reviews videos, online resources and paper manuals and materials to maintain current repair and maintenance methods and practices.

  • Job Specifications

  • Knowledge of vehicle and equipment repairs, preventative maintenance, and diagnostics.

  • Ability to provide guidance, training, and direction to lower-level staff.

  • Physical Requirements

  • Will be required to climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch for frequent and extended periods of times.
  • Ability to lift and carry 75-lbs.
  • Ability to work in adverse or extreme weather conditions.

  • Heavy Work - Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Emergency Management Responsibilities

    In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department, the County's Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency / disaster.

    Career Progression

    Employees in this broadband classification who acquire the competencies and minimum qualifications for the next tier will automatically advance to the new tier upon submission of appropriate documentation of qualifications. The probationary period may be extended as the Fleet Management Department deems it appropriate.

    Additional Requirements

    Possession of a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake endorsement will be required within the probationary period.

    Certification in Welding Fabrication may be required.
