Kentucky Certification – Guidance Counselor
To direct and evaluate the learning experiences of students in all activities sponsored by the school; to plan and implement an instruction program and provide related educational services to meet student needs.
Will be an ambassador for Spencer County Public Schools and commit to offering excellent customer service to students, parents, and staff.
Responsibilities
Implement an effective counseling and guidance program focusing on understanding of self and others; coping strategies; peer relationships and effective social skills; communication, problem-solving, decision making, conflict resolution, personal safety, and study skills; substances education and multicultural awareness.
Provide individual and small group counseling dealing with self-image and self-esteem, personal adjustment, family issues, interpersonal concerns, academic development, anger management, as well as peer mediation and negotiation.
Provide assessment by helping students identify their skills, abilities, achievements, and interest through counseling and guidance activities, and interpretation of standardized test.
Work with specialized populations with needs that require special attention, such as culturally diverse populations and students with varying abilities.
Coordinate school and community business resources, school wide guidance-related activities, and extracurricular programs which promote students’ personal growth and skill development.
Provide consultation with teachers, administrators, school psychologists, school social workers, and outside agencies and social services concerning the welfare of the students.
Make appropriate referrals for special services for students and families within the school and community.
Communicate and exchange information with parents/guardians by way of conferences, parent education workshops, phone calls and home visits.
Recruit, identify and select eligible participants for programs.
Conduct pre-assessment to determine student needs and post assessment to measure growth.
Provide specialized assistance and information to students and others concerning student services areas.
Determine program eligibility based on applications and supporting documentation.
Assess student needs and develop viable plans and alternatives.
Perform related duties as assigned.
