Job Summary:

The Housing Authority Accounting Specialist is a critical member of our finance team, responsible for managing financial transactions, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations. This role requires a detail-oriented and organized individual who can contribute to the financial integrity of the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Financial Transactions:
  • Process financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll, accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Reconcile financial records, bank statements, and accounts to identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Budget Support:
  • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of the housing authority's budget.
  • Collaborate with budget managers to track and report on budget performance.
  • Help identify variances and recommend corrective actions.
  • Financial Reporting:
  • Prepare financial reports, statements, and schedules for management and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual financial statements.
  • Audit Support:
  • Collaborate with auditors during the annual financial audit.
  • Provide requested financial information and documentation to auditors in a timely manner.
  • Assist in addressing audit findings and implementing recommended improvements.
  • Account Reconciliation:
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Investigate and resolve reconciling items and discrepancies promptly.
  • Compliance and Regulations:
  • Stay informed about federal, state, and local accounting regulations and standards.
  • Ensure that all financial transactions and reporting comply with relevant regulations.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping:
  • Maintain organized and complete financial records and documentation.
  • Implement effective record-keeping processes for financial transactions.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (preferred).
  • Previous experience in accounting or finance roles.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Familiarity with public sector accounting and HUD accounting guidelines (preferred).
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
