But that is what makes us so incredibly unique. Much of the county is US National Forest & BLM wilderness areas. While the year-round local population is small, a very large amount of second home owners and tourists come to the county (particularly Lake City) during the summer months (June through Sept.); however, hunting is huge in this county, and so is our winter-long ice climbing which is just outside of Lake City. During the summer busy season, we are one of the few - if not the only - counties which allow OHVs on CO State Highway 149 through Lake City. This is to facilitate visitor's access to the nationally-known Alpine Loop. With this, we have a unique challenge with traffic enforcement and our visitors, while usually great folks from around the country, can and sometimes do bring their issues with them. So if you want a massively unique mountain patrolling experience, you will also gain plenty of experience with the usual law enforcement calls for service. The Hinsdale County Sheriff’s Office works to provide professional and courteous law enforcement services for our local residents and visitors. HCSO believes that training and proper equipment is a high priority and works hard to provide in-house and outside training for all sworn deputies.Application Process: Note: Applications can be downloaded from our HCSO Employment Page.
