Job Summary:
The Accounting Manager oversees the financial operations of the construction company, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in accounting practices. This role involves managing financial reporting, budgeting, cost tracking, and team supervision while maintaining a strong focus on project-based accounting and compliance with construction industry regulations.
This position is an on-site role, Monday-Friday. Compensation is $100-140k bonus. Company is not considering internationally based candidates at this time.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management:
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP (or other applicable standards).
- Oversee cash flow management, accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), and payroll processes.
- Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
Construction-Specific Accounting:
- Monitor project budgets, costs, and profitability.
- Ensure proper job costing and allocation of expenses to specific projects.
- Work with project managers to review Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules, billings, and change orders.
- Track retention payments and ensure compliance with contracts and lien laws.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Assist in developing annual budgets and financial forecasts.
- Analyze variances between actual and budgeted performance to provide actionable insights.
Compliance and Audit:
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including tax reporting and filings.
- Coordinate audits and provide necessary documentation to external auditors.
- Maintain compliance with construction-specific tax laws and insurance requirements.
Team Leadership:
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering professional growth and teamwork.
- Establish, document, and enforce accounting policies and procedures.
- Provide training to team members on accounting tools and software.
Technology and Process Improvement:
- Implement and optimize accounting software and tools specific to the construction industry (e.g., Sage, Procore, or QuickBooks).
- Identify opportunities to improve financial systems, workflows, and reporting processes.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA designation preferred).
- 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
- Experience in construction industry accounting (strongly preferred).
Skills and Competencies:
- In-depth knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Proficiency with accounting software, ERP systems, and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
