Our client, one of the nation’s leading specialized insurers, is seeking a Regulatory Compliance Counsel. This role within the Legal Department of the company’s Life Division reports to the Division Compliance Officer of Life & Health. The role is hybrid with weekly reporting into our Chesterfield, MO office or Chicago, IL office. The position requires an attorney with knowledge of the insurance industry and a proven record of successfully handling complex legal and compliance matters within heavily regulated industries. This person will possess strong judgment, work with an appropriate sense of urgency and provide proactive, business-focused counsel to the company’s Life Division.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate, direct and advise on Market Conduct Exams.
- Manage the Regulatory Change Management and Compliance Monitoring processes.
- Oversee the consumer and department of insurance complaint process.
- Monitor and implement insurance laws, regulations, and guidance.
- Provide legal advice on all aspects of the life insurance business including the design, sale, and administration of life and other insurance policies, as well as agent and distribution matters.
- Provide proactive and timely legal counsel in support of strategic and tactical business initiatives.
- Identify and mitigate risk to the company by providing relevant counsel and effective business-focused solutions.
- Build and maintain relationships with regulators and industry stakeholders.
- Support business partners in finding legally compliant solutions to challenging business problems.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with management and internal business clients, agents, outside counsel, and the company’s partners to gain a deep understanding of the Company’s business, challenges, risks, and opportunities.
- Prepare various regulatory filings and draft policy forms.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited institution and membership in good standing of the Missouri Bar (or licensed in another state with willingness to relocate)
- Four or more (4 ) years of combined law firm and in-house legal experience
- Three or more (3 ) years of experience at an insurance company within a legal and regulatory compliance role (specifically life insurance a plus)
- Demonstrated experience interacting with state insurance regulators to resolve issues and meet company objectives
- Superior verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Results driven with strong business acumen and the ability to influence others
- Ability to work collaboratively across all levels of the organization and the flexibility to adapt to change and lead an organization through change.

OTHER DETAILS
- The salary range for this position is $125,000-$208,000 (depending upon experience).
- When determining candidate offers, the company considers experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location among other factors.
