JOB SUMMARY
Ensures compliance with EPA regulations related to Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), by performing environmental building inspections for the purpose of maintaining Asbestos Management Plans for all HISD facilities. Monitors and maintains visual surveillance for problems related to the presence of mold and visual surveillance for problems related to the presence of lead base paint hazards.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implements inspection procedures by locating, documenting, inspecting, and sampling suspected asbestos containing building materials.
- Compiles and transcribes data to the Asbestos Tracker database. Documents the location, quantity and the condition of asbestos containing building materials.
- Reviews existing archived data from previous inspections to produce an updated record for asbestos management plans.
- Investigates school, maintenance and contractor work-orders to eliminate potential disturbance of hazardous building materials during repair or renovation work.
- Monitors and maintains visual surveillance at all schools and facilities for problems related to the presence of mold hazards.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION
High School Diploma or GED
WORK EXPERIENCE
3 to 5 years
SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION
- Microsoft Office
- Office equipment (e.g., computer, copier), Hand tools (e.g., hammer, shovel, screwdriver), Power tools (e.g., radial saw, reciprocating saw, drill, pheunomatic hammer), Vehicles (e.g., automobile, truck, tractor, forklift)
- Certified Inspector preferred; Certification/ Licensing would otherwise be obtained with 90 days from time of hire and be maintained through the length of employment.
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice and training to staff.
WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT
Work involves the application of moderately complex procedures and tasks that are quite varied. Independent judgment is often required to select and apply the most appropriate of available resources. Ongoing supervision is provided on an "as needed" basis.
BUDGET AUTHORITY
No budget development activity is required.

Decisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job's own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures or services.
IMPACT OF DECISIONS
Follows rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.
COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS
Basic communication - very little communication required such as receiving basic instructions. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor and co-workers in own department.

Follows through with customer inquiries, requests and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution.
WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Work involves continuous exposure to hazardous substances, potentially dangerous situations, and unpleasant work conditions such as adverse weather conditions or extreme risk of accidental or ill health.
- Ability to carry and/or lift up to 15 to 44 pounds.
