POSITION SUMMARY
As a key member of HISD’s high-performance team, the School Nurse plays a vital role in ensuring student well-being and success. This position is responsible for implementing comprehensive health programs, providing preventive care, and fostering a safe and supportive school environment. Through collaboration with students, families, and staff, the School Nurse supports holistic student development, ensuring every child is healthy and ready to learn in alignment with HISD’s mission to transform education.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
- Develops, implements, and monitors individualized health care and emergency plans for designated students, ensuring they receive the medical attention needed to thrive in the classroom.
- Provides direct health care services, including first aid, medication administration, and emergency response, following state laws and HISD policies to maintain a safe and effective learning environment.
- Leads preventive health initiatives, such as safety assessments, state-mandated screenings, and immunization compliance, ensuring students meet health requirements for optimal school performance.
- Collaborates with families and community health providers, offering guidance and resources to help students and families access medical care.
- Serves as a health education advocate, conducting age-appropriate health awareness activities in partnership with school staff.
- Works with multidisciplinary teams, including campus leaders and community organizations, to enhance HISD’s school health programs, supporting the district’s commitment to high-quality student care.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas
CPR/AED Certification

Experience
Minimum experience requirement - 12 months.
NOTE: HISD follows the Texas Board of Nursing recommendation that a newly licensed nurse not practice in an independent setting for a period of 12-18 months post-licensure
Other Requirements
The ability to implement emergency care including the ability to independently respond to an emergency, perform CPR, administer emergency medications, and other lifesaving measures within standard practice guidelines.
The ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms, both internally and externally.
The ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, drive and/or be mobile.
Valid Texas driver’s license with applicable insurance coverage.
