ABOUT THE HISTORIC GREENWOOD DISTRICT MAIN STREET
The Historic Greenwood District Main Street program is dedicated to preserving, revitalizing, and celebrating the legacy of Black Wall Street. Through economic development, cultural programming, and strategic placemaking, we aim to foster a thriving, resilient commercial district that honors Greenwood’s history while shaping its future.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Executive Director serves as the chief advocate, strategist, and leader of Historic Greenwood District Main Street. This visionary leader will manage operations, secure funding, and drive initiatives aligned with the D.O.P.E. framework:
- Design – Enhancing the built environment, streetscapes, and historic preservation efforts.
- Organization – Strengthening partnerships, board governance, and volunteer engagement.
- Promotion – Elevating Greenwood as a premier cultural and business destination.
- Economic Vitality – Supporting entrepreneurs, small businesses, and equitable economic growth.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Strategy
- Serve as the primary representative and spokesperson for Historic Greenwood District Main Street.
- Develop and implement a strategic plan guided by Design, Organization, Promotion, and Economic Vitality.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, equity, and innovation within the organization.
Economic Vitality & Business Development
- Support and advocate for local small businesses, startups, and property owners.
- Lead initiatives to attract investment, restore historic properties, and foster inclusive economic growth.
- Engage city, state, and federal agencies to leverage economic development opportunities.
Design & Placemaking
- Oversee historic preservation efforts to maintain Greenwood’s architectural and cultural heritage.
- Implement streetscape improvements, façade enhancement programs, and public space activation projects.
- Work with developers, architects, and city planners to ensure thoughtful, community-driven development.
Promotion, Marketing & Events
- Develop and implement branding, storytelling, and marketing campaigns that elevate Greenwood’s visibility.
- Oversee signature events, including cultural festivals, business expos, and community celebrations.
- Collaborate with local artists, historians, and entrepreneurs to promote Greenwood as a cultural and economic hub.
Organizational Management & Fundraising
- Develop and execute fundraising strategies, including grants, sponsorships, and donor relations.
- Manage the organization’s financial health, including budgeting, reporting, and compliance.
- Work closely with the Board of Directors to implement governance best practices.
- Recruit, develop, and manage staff, volunteers, and program committees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Passion for the legacy and future of the Historic Greenwood District.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, urban planning, nonprofit management, economic development, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in nonprofit management, community development, or urban revitalization.
- Proven success in fundraising, grant writing, and financial management.
- Strong relationship-building, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience with public-private partnerships, small business development, and Main Street America principles.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Experience in historic preservation, community land trusts, or real estate development.
- Knowledge of economic and social challenges facing BIPOC-led business districts.
