The Horticulture Assistant is a part-time, year-round hands-on landscape/garden maintenance position that administers all landscape-related horticulture functions at Historic London Town and Gardens. This position involves performing a variety of general grounds maintenance and landscaping duties to ensure the upkeep of the property. The horticulture assistant works collaboratively and respectfully with all volunteers and staff contributing to the maintenance and enhancement of the aesthetic and functional quality of the gardens throughout the seasons. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide general landscape/grounds maintenance and basic care of the gardens including: mowing, trimming, blowing, edging, watering lawns, garden beds, and potted plants; fertilizing, pesticide application, turf installation, water feature care, path weeding and cleaning; irrigation repair; rake, weed, and edge lawns; grade and prepare base for laying sod and seed; prune shrubs, perennials’ tree and brush removal, and other related tasks. 
  • General garden/grounds maintenance on site including areas: parking lot, administrative and historic buildings garden beds, woodland and ornamental gardens. 
  • Assist with grounds clean-up including snow removal; remove leaves, sticks, and other debris from grounds; clear sidewalks, parking lots, gutters, and catch basins. 
  • Operate mechanical equipment used for grounds maintenance/general labor operations including push and riding mowers, tillers, string trimmers, chain saw and leaf blower. 
  • May be required to report to work outside of the regularly scheduled shift to address to assist with departmental emergencies, or to deal with issues of public safety. 
  • Perform general labor tasks of moderate to heavy nature as assigned by supervisor. 
  • Responsible for maintaining work area and performing job duties in a manner which complies with federal, state, and London Town safety policies. 
  • Work independently outdoors on routine grounds maintenance and specific projects. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Horticulture. 

 

Qualifications: 

Required: 

  • High School diploma or equivalent. 
  • An interest in the natural world, greenhouse procedures, and gardens management. 
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and part of a team. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, visitors, and other constituents. 
  • Must be respectful, personable, flexible, and take pride in their work. 
  • Applicants must have the ability and willingness to work in an environment that utilizes pesticides as a plant management tool. 

 Preferred: 

  • Experience using various small engines, including string trimmers, chainsaws, leaf blowers. 
  • Experience using medium sized equipment, including tractors, golf carts, and zero-turn mowers. 

 

Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry items up to 50 pounds. 
  • Willingness and ability to perform physical work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to carry, climb, stoop, reach, dig and load and unload various objects. 
  • Ability to operate equipment and various power tools, including but not limited to, pole saw, chainsaws, blowers, mowers, weed eaters, tillers, as well as a variety of gardening hand tools. 

 

Working Condigtions: 

  • This position primarily involves outdoor work, except extreme temperatures or weather events. 
  • Exposure to hot, humid summer conditions, as well as biting insects and irritant plants (i.e. poison ivy). 
  • Must be willing to work in a variety of weather conditions, including rain, heat and cold.

 

Reports To: Director of Horticulture

 

Compensation: The pay rate for this position is $16.50-18/hr., depending on experience. 

 

Work Schedule:

This is a part-time, year-round position with an approximate work schedule of 15 hours per week. The typical work week will be Monday-Friday; however occasional weekend work may be required depending on London Town’s Gardens program schedule.
