The 3D Printing Design and Fabrication Specialist will be responsible for the development, engineering, and 3D printing product components in support of R&D projects at HITT. This team member will support 3D printing initiatives from concept through completion and coordinate across interdisciplinary teams, including project teams, consultants, and suppliers. The ideal candidate must have an in-depth knowledge of thermoplastic printing, including the key factors contributing to success.
The candidate must be self-motivated, highly organized, and capable of working independently to execute complex projects. Keys to success in the role include conducting, observing, and refining efforts in material and design testing to develop actionable insights for future prints. The candidate will support the development of drawings for parts and implement quality control processes to support manufacturing.
Key to this position are strong written and verbal communication skills, project management skills, creative thinking, relationship management, and meticulous attention to detail. Most importantly, candidates should be curious and excited about operating in a new territory without fear of failure. This team member will report to the R&D Additive Manufacturing Lead.

Responsibilities
- The 3D Printing Design and Fabrication Specialist is responsible for the development of concepts under the purview of R&D at HITT. In this role, he/she will assist the Additive Manufacturing Lead in the optimization of designed components into 3D print-ready models based on printer, material, and software (CAD & Slicer) constraints.
- Use CAD software suites to model complex geometry, calibrate slicers to export tailored toolpaths, and operate large scale printers to print said models.
- Maintain thorough documentation of slicer parameters on each print iteration, identifying trends and making profile/parameter corrections for optimized prints.
- This individual will also serve as a support for FDM and LFAM systems in times of overflow.
- Diagnose and maintain desktop format printers, communicating with the printer manufacturers as needed.
- Assist in medium to large batch printing of components, including staging and operation.
- Receive and develop Design concepts in sketch/rendering form, models parts & operates slicer software and FDM printer to ensure repeatable production of high-quality parts.
- Assist the company in developing manufacturing equipment partnerships, while demonstrating strong interpersonal skills as a HITT ambassador and champion of R&D initiatives.
- Education and Training: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or industrial design (BA/BS) from a four-year college or university
- 4 years of experience with 3D printing systems (FFF/FDM, FGF) in an industrial environment, having worked with numerous polymers, including those prone to warping.
- Strong CAD proficiency required. Fusion 360 preferred. Rhino/Grasshopper (parametric modeling) experience encouraged. Comfortable with creating and translating Surface, Solid, and Mesh based modeling in complex geometries.
- Possess strong written communication and documentation proficiencies, strong note keeping and reporting skills are a must.
- Ability to produce production-ready build drawings in metric and imperial measurements.
- Proficient in articulating complex manufacturing processes in a clear and understandable manner to those without specialized AM knowledge.
- Adept at operating and maintaining Prusa Printers, consistently adhering to safety protocols, and respecting designated yellow zones for workplace safety.
- Exhibits confidence in navigating through production challenges, whether leading to success or failure, and possesses the resilience to revisit and revise initial plans as needed.
- Is deeply enthusiastic about expanding additive manufacturing to consumer-level production, bridging the gap between design and engineering.
