The Public Spending Group is a high-profile and rewarding place to work. The Strategy, Performance & Improvement Team is one of the central Government Finance Function (GFF) teams, responsible for driving finance performance, standards (GovS006: Finance) & leading practice to achieve a vision of a modern, digital finance function that delivers quality services more effectively & efficiently.
Over the next year we have big ambitions to reset the way the function assesses and drives performance, moving to a comprehensive system-wide view. We launched our 5-year functional strategy in early 2025; and want to establish a clear line of sight from performance metrics to strategic objectives, and enable meaningful performance insight for senior decision makers across government into the efficiency and effectiveness of the function.
The twelve-person team works across government, providing the individual with the opportunity to be part of creating positive and long-lasting change across finance function communities. Eligibility Statement
A candidate is not eligible to apply for a role in the Civil Service if the application is made within a 5 year period following a dismissal for carrying out internal fraud against government. Everyone working with government assets must complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks. Additionally, individuals appointed to the Treasury group will be subject to National Security Vetting. The level of security vetting required for this role is Counter Terrorist Check (CTC)
To allow for meaningful checks to be carried out, applicants will need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 out of the past 5 years. In exceptional circumstances, for example if you have been working abroad on a government posting, a lack of residency would not be a bar to security clearance however the Department will need to consider eligibility on a case-by-case basis once the advert closing date has passed.
