Lead meaningful change, foster collaboration with members, and play a key role in shaping the future of Herron Island.

Herron Island is a small, nonprofit community in South Puget Sound, accessible by ferry from the Key Peninsula, about 45 minutes from Tacoma, WA. It’s governed by HOA bylaws and services include well water management and ferry operations. Our community is comprised of just under 400 properties, and we think it’s heaven on earth.

The HMC Management is seeking a dynamic and strategic leader to oversee our daily operations and drive forward-thinking initiatives that will enhance the services provided to Herron Island members. This is a unique opportunity to lead change, modernize operations, and collaborate with the Board of Directors, subject matter experts, and a supportive community of volunteers to implement strategic plans, streamline systems, and ensure financial viability. If you're passionate about creating a positive impact, driving operational improvements, and helping shape the future of a vibrant community, this could be the role for you!

Job Summary
As the Island Manager, you will plan, direct, and coordinate activities to ensure efficient operations, compliance with regulatory requirements, and budgetary adherence. You will provide both strategic and hands-on leadership to help HMC evolve, improve service quality, and achieve organizational goals. You'll also play a key role in the development and implementation of strategic priorities, collaborating closely with the HMC Board and community partners.

Key Responsibilities

· Operational Management: Oversee daily operations, including ferry services, membership billing, and member-related services, while ensuring compliance with regulations and policies.

· Strategic Leadership: Collaborate with the HMC Board to define short and long-term priorities, driving initiatives that align with our mission and ensure long-term financial success.

· People Management: Foster a positive, inclusive work environment that supports staff development, retention, and growth, while ensuring a high-performance culture.

· Cost Management: Develop and implement efficient systems that improve service delivery, reduce costs, and optimize resource allocation.

· Community Engagement: Serve as the key liaison between HMC, Herron Island members, and external stakeholders, ensuring transparent communication and strong community relationships.

· Legal and Compliance Oversight: Ensure HMC operations comply with all applicable laws and regulations, acting as the primary contact for legal matters and regulatory agencies.

What We’re Looking For

· A strong, collaborative leader with experience in operations management and a passion for improving service delivery and member satisfaction.

· A proven track record of driving strategic initiatives and leading change within an organization.

· Someone who thrives in a hands-on role and can balance daily operations with long-term planning.

· An advocate for financial sustainability, with experience in budgeting, cost control, and resource planning.

· A natural communicator, capable of building relationships with diverse stakeholders and engaging with volunteers, contractors, and team members.

Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in business administration, management, or a related field (required); Master’s degree preferred.

· Minimum of 5 years of city, operations management and/or public administration experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.

· Experience and/or deep insights on HOA and non-profit management, highly desired. Experience with maritime standards (in support of our Ferry Operations) and water management infrastructure (supporting the island’s well and community water source), is a plus.

· Strong budget management skills and experience ensuring financial viability.

· Proven ability to lead change, and modernize operations, improving efficiency and service quality.

· Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with the Board, staff, and external partners.

Working Conditions

· Once fully established, the full time role may allow for 1–2 days/week of remote work, with onsite work on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, as well as the 2nd Saturday of each month for Board meetings. Plan to spend the initial ~90 days onsite, to support onboarding and the implementation of operational initiatives.

· This role may occasionally require evening or weekend work (i.e. supporting emergencies).

· Travel to/from the island is a 10-15 minute passage aboard a small ferry boat. Ferry tickets to support work-related passage will be provided.

· Job objectives may require occasional local travel and exposure to outdoor elements (i.e. errands, appointments, and island operation inspections).

Why Join Us?
This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the long-term success of Herron Island, while also having a direct impact on operations and the lives of the community. You’ll be supported by a group of dedicated volunteers and have the chance to shape the future of HMC through strategic planning and operational excellence.
