This is a 10-week externship program offering nursing students an opportunity to earn while learning. Students are oriented and provided training in specific skills. Under the direction of a registered nurse partner, student nurses practice selected skills and gain confidence in the nursing environment.
Externs are placed at one of the Hackensack Meridian Health hospitals. Current employees of Hackensack Meridian Health who meet the eligibility criteria will be considered first. This externship program is available at the following Hackensack Meridian locations in New Jersey:

- Palisades Medical Center (North Bergen)
- JFK University Medical Center (Edison)
- Bayshore Medical Center (Holmdel)
- Riverview Medical Center (Red Bank)
- Raritan Bay Medical Center (Perth Amboy)
- Old Bridge Medical Center (Old Bridge)
- Carrier Clinic (Belle Mead)
- Jersey Shore University Medical Center (Neptune)
- Ocean University Medical Center (Brick)
- Southern Ocean Medical Center (Manahawkin)
This special student nurse extern (SNE) program will begin on May 27, 2025 and end on Aug 2, 2025. Those students who completed externships in the past are encouraged to apply.

- You must be currently matriculated in a Board of Nursing approved BSN program or an HMH affiliated Associate Degree program to prepare for registered nurse licensure and be eligible to begin the final (senior) year of the respective nursing program. (Graduating in the Fall/Winter of 2025 or Spring/Summer of 2026).
- High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required. Current matriculation in a Board of Nursing approved program to prepare for Registered Nurse licensure required.
- Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher strongly preferred.
- Ability to work varied days and varied hours.
