HMM is seeking a skilled Intermodal Rail Operations Manager to manage inland rail billing operations across the US, Canada, and Latin America. This role focuses on minimizing rail cargo idling time for both inbound and outbound shipments, ensuring smooth terminal operations, and pushing for the quick release of HMM cargo as top priority. The position also involves managing rail billing EDI issues and addressing customer requests to maintain reliable rail services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Understand and work with HMM's Compass system for rail billing processes and ensure smooth operations
- Monitor service provider performance, focusing on improving rail transit times and ensuring reliable service
- Maximize HMM’s rail volume at LA/LB terminals by securing on-dock volume and reducing reliance on other carriers
- Coordinate rail cargo release dates with terminals and inland rail facilities, ensuring timely shipments
- Address rail billing EDI issues in collaboration with HMM IT and railroad IT teams to resolve any concern
- Prepare detailed reports on terminal idling issues, providing insights to management for continuous improvement
- Recommend system enhancements to streamline operations and boost efficiency.
- Maintain comprehensive Rail Operation manuals for consistent, best-practice processes
- Train new hires in HASA Traffic to ensure a skilled and knowledgeable team
- Take on additional responsibilities as assigned, contributing to the success of the rail operations team
Required Skills & Experience
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Transportation, Operations, or Supply Chain Management, Business administration or equivalent education and experience.
Experience:
- Prior experience in freight forwarding, logistics, or a related field is preferred
- 5 years of Experience in ocean exports is highly desirable
- 4 years of Experience in intermodal rail operations, rail billing, or logistics coordination is highly preferred
- Experience working in US, Canada, and Latin American rail operations, particularly in major port terminals like LA/LB
- General understanding of International Container Business especially inland service in the US area preferred
Essential Skills:
- Ability to monitor and analyze service provider performance, identify issues like rail cargo idling, and propose improvements
- Strong communication skills to liaise effectively with terminals, vendors, and internal teams
- Strong understanding of rail billing systems, especially EDI processes and system integrations
- Familiarity with terminal operations and rail transit times.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to rail billing, cargo idling, and other logistical concerns
- Excellent attention to detail to ensure accuracy in billing, cargo management, and reporting
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for reporting and communication
- Ability to learn and navigate new software and systems quickly
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating with multiple departments (e.g., Terminal Operations, Pricing)

Additional Details:
The pay range listed for this position is the anticipated starting salary or wage range, and the final offered rate will be based on individual merit and the relative compensation of employees in similar positions. HMM employee benefits include highly subsidized individual and family insurance coverage (medical, dental and vision), term life and disability insurance, 401(k) employer matching contributions, paid holidays, and up to 10 vacation days and six sick days in the first year.
