Primary Function of the Position
As a Mechanic Assistant, you will provide invaluable support to mechanics in automotive repair shops, contributing directly to repair and maintenance tasks. This role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals aspiring to become mechanics to gain practical experience and learn best practices under the guidance of seasoned professionals. Your responsibilities will evolve as you gain knowledge and proficiency, starting from basic tasks such as oil changes and tire rotations to more complex duties like parts replacement and diagnostic support.
Position Responsibilities
- Support Mechanics: Assist mechanics in various projects, ensuring they have the necessary tools and parts. Seek clarification from mechanics on tasks and provide relevant information as needed.
- Perform Preventive Maintenance Tasks: Conduct routine maintenance activities such as oil changes, tire rotations, fluid replacements, and bulb changes, initially under supervision but gradually with increased autonomy.
- Repair and Replace Automotive Parts: Replace worn-out or failing parts such as belts and hoses. With experience, undertake more advanced repairs under supervision, such as engine component replacements.
- Provide Diagnostic Support: Assist in diagnosing vehicle performance issues, learn diagnostic methods, and use diagnostic tools. Work with diagnostic tools and provide reports and data to mechanics to aid in repairs.
- Maintain Vehicle Records: Create and revise vehicle records, ensuring accuracy and updating information related to repairs and maintenance activities.
- Support Shop Cleanliness and Safety: Maintain clean work areas and safely dispose of hazardous materials such as oil, gasoline, or other fluids. Conduct safety checks to ensure a hazard-free work environment.
- Other duties as assigned: May be required to further the program's goals and align with HAP’s mission.

- Basic working knowledge of automotive mechanics and parts.
- Some experience in diagnostics and troubleshooting.

- Subject to regular exposure to fumes, dust, odors, vehicle exhaust, dirt, oil, grease, and noise from vehicle operations.
- Indoor/outdoor environment subjected to changing temperatures.
- Able to focus on data, analyze the information, and draw conclusions.
- Frequent interactions with coworkers and participants requiring the ability to communicate effectively.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- A minimum of two years of job experience performing basic auto maintenance, such as oil and fluid changes, tire rotation, and brake replacement.
- Must acquire basic automotive tools upon hire or be willing to gradually purchase once hired.
- Currently have a CDL or ability to obtain CDL within one year of hire.
- Additional vocational or technical education in automotive repair is beneficial.
- Knowledge of automotive repair and electronics a plus.
- On-the-job training provided, with opportunities for advancement to more advanced tasks and higher-level mechanical positions.
