What are the responsibilities and job description for the Referral Testing Specialist position at HNL Lab Medicine?
The role of the Referral Testing Specialist is to ensure the overall process of sending specimens to reference labs follows all policies and procedures for any testing coming into the department. The Referral Testing Specialist will be responsible for complying with the specimen requirements for each reference lab and will resolve any outliers in a timely manner. The ideal candidate must be able to multi-task, prioritize and manage own time efficiently.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
- Develops and maintains excellent working knowledge of HNL’s policies, procedures, processes and services.
- Maintains the necessary training and competency to answer the most frequently asked questions from both internal and external customers.
- Responds efficiently and effectively to customer inquiries regarding specimen requirements, test results, test schedules and esoteric testing.
- Maintains Saf T Pak certification and follows all processes and procedures for adhering to IATA packaging requirements.
- Reviews test updates from reference labs and makes appropriate changes in all HNL systems as needed.
- Periodically reviews departmental SOPs and provides recommended changes to management.
- Reviews and resolves assigned pending logs in a timely manner.
- Ensures all specimens sent to reference labs are in compliance with the labs’ requirements for specimen type, processing, volume, and temperature. Resolves any issues prior to sending. Ensures all necessary forms are provided and all required information is included.
- Performs the resulting of test results that are not interfaced from all reference labs.
- Responds to and quickly resolves all exceptions and problems from all reference labs.
- Maintains competency on all stations in the Referral Testing department to include Technical Support.
- Provides training to new employees as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:
Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for high complexity testing. Bachelor’s degree
required in medical technology or bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; or must meet CLIA grandfathered medical technologist regulations.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret both internal and external documents. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
Math Ability:
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability:
Excellent organization, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Discretion and confidentiality with patient data. Ability to perform duties with accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to work under stress and in crisis situations.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in using various software products including but not limited to the Laboratory Information System, Salesforce, and Microsoft Office.
Communication Ability:
Excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills. This individual must be able to convey information effectively and efficiently. The individual must demonstrate the ability to engage in active listening; adapt communication style to the audience; and display friendliness, confidence, respect, empathy and responsiveness.
Certificates and Licenses:
Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc.).
