Overview
The Certified Home Health/Hospice Aide (CHHA) is a paraprofessional member of the home care/hospice team who works under the supervision of a registered nurse or therapist and performs and assists patient with various personal care services as necessary to meet the patient’s personal needs and to promote comfort. The CHHA is responsible for observing patients, reporting these observations, and documenting observations and care performed.
The CHHA will be assigned in a manner that promotes quality, continuity and safety of a patient’s care. The CHHA will not function in any manner viewed as the practice of nursing according to the state's Nurse Practice Act. Specifically, the CHHA will not administer medications, take physician's orders or perform procedures requiring the training, knowledge and skill of a nurse, such as sterile techniques.
Education and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Registration on the Home Care Aide Registry through the Department of Social Services, Home Care Services Bureau, in good standing.
- Must be a licensed driver with an automobile that is insured in accordance with state and/or organization requirements and is in good working order.
- Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail and the impaired. Provides a calm manner when in a patient’s home.
Hospice
Completed a minimum of 75 hours of classroom and supervised practical training. Sixteen hours of class room must be completed prior to a mandatory 16 hours of practical training. Understands hospice philosophy, comfortable providing specialized care to the terminally ill and secure with issues of death/dying.
Certification Required
- Current BLS certification
- Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) certification in the State of California, in good standing
