POSITION SUMMARY: The Estimator/Project Manager - Interior/Exterior Specialties will work with the Estimating Department and will support the estimating and project management duties for Hoffman Specialty Contracting, Inc. (HSC). This position will report directly to President of HSC and will closely collaborate with the HSC Operations and Project Teams and Hoffman’s Estimating Department. The Estimator/Project Manager will oversee estimating for commercial wall and ceiling assemblies and interior/exterior specialties for both HSC and Hoffman Construction. The position may also include project management duties for commercial wall and ceiling projects in addition to the estimating role. This position will be in-office with limited onsite project duties and/or requirements.
SALARY RANGE: $94,000 to $120,000 depending on experience.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Estimate self-perform scopes of work for commercial, high tech, and manufacturing wall and ceiling Projects, including metal stud framing, insulation, drywall, finishing, ceiling systems, rough carpentry/blocking, plaster, and interior/exterior specialty scopes.
- On screen take off of material quantities.
- Perform contract administration for secured projects, including buy-out and hand-off to the HSC’s Operations Team.
- Collaborate with the management team in creating final estimates for project budgets.
- Work with the HSC Operations Team throughout the preconstruction process: review plans, specifications, procedures, timelines, and construction requirements; identify constructability issues.
- Establish labor productivities for estimates and staffing requirements for each construction phase.
- Prepare wage and benefit schedules, production rates, and assist supervisors with bid reviews.
- Maintain the estimating cost database to ensure up-to-date costs.
- Consult with clients, architects, subcontractors, and material suppliers to discuss and formulate estimates, effect cost reductions, and resolve issues.
- Assist during Conceptual, Schematic Design, Design Development, and Construction Documents phases of projects.
- Review design documents for proper information to receive accurate pricing from subcontractors and suppliers; generate acceptable value engineering ideas and prepare life-cycle costing.
- Solicit subcontractor pricing for work outside our self-perform group.
- Work with the Virtual Design Department to generate quantities from design models and create bid packages.
- Maintain positive relationships with area vendors for competitive material and equipment pricing.
- Understand market conditions, including competitive approach, backlog, level of risk for work, and other factors for establishing margin percentages.
- Participate in internal bid reviews with supervisors and project teams.
- Contribute to customer alignment objectives by creating and maintaining positive customer relations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, such as change order management or billings, depending on the project(s).
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
EDUCATION
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or equivalent degree and/or equivalent field work experience required. Education background in materials and methods of construction.
EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of four (4) years’ commercial construction estimating experience required.
- Specific experience in commercial, healthcare, industrial, water treatment, and/or hi-tech types of projects required.
- Project Management experience preferred.
- Personnel management experience preferred.
- Experience collaborating with representatives of trade union preferred.
POSITION RELATED SKILLS
- Proficient in Windows and Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point and Teams), and have a general understanding of working within a computer network.
- Experience with project management software such as Prolog, Procore, E-Builder, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, and Primavera Project Planner (P6).
- Experience with commercial drywall estimating software; OnScreen Takeoff & Quickbid
- Experience with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit and Navisworks.
- Understanding of the market conditions including competitive approach, backlog, level, or risk for work and other factors for establishing margin percentages.
- Training in design and construction document reading, design specifications, survey theory and techniques.
- Experience in organizing technical data in a neat and accurate method. Familiar with CSI specification system for construction.
- Highly developed visual observation and interpretation skills.
- Ability to work well and maintain a cooperative attitude through high-pressure situations.
- Excellent time-management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work while frequently interrupted by phone calls and questions on work in progress.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to work closely with variety of trade and craft people in a field work situation. Patience and professionalism are essential.
- Must be a strong team player with the ability to collaborate with various personnel within and across departments and at all levels of leadership. Work schedule must be flexible to allow extended hours or off-shift work to accommodate changing construction schedule and sequences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position in an office environment more than 50% of the time, with occasional requirements to move about on the job site.
- Must be able to access work being performed on multiple building levels.
- Hands/Arms: Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
- Sight: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; reading printed and digital documents
- Hearing: Must be able to work in proximity to loud equipment 25% of the time. Must be able to wear hearing protection, as necessary. Often required to communicate with customers and coworkers in an office setting and, on the phone/digital meetings.
- Speech: Ability to communicate laws, ordinances, plans, regulations, protocols, directives, and standard operating procedures related to project scope. Constantly required to communicate with customers and coworkers in an office setting.
- Bending/Twisting: minimal.
- Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: minimal.
