What are the responsibilities and job description for the Industrial Designer position at Hoffmaster Group Inc.?
Primary Purpose of the Role The industrial designer will focus on the design, development, and improvement of products to ensure they are functional, aesthetically appealing, and user-friendly. Blending art and engineering this role involves considering materials, ergonomics, manufacturing processes, and the overall experience of using the product. Essential Job Duties Research and Concept Development :
- Understanding market needs, user behavior, environmental impact, and trends in tableware, cooking and baking design. Analyzing competitors, study consumer preferences (e.g., design aesthetics, ease of use), and work within the constraints of manufacturing processes (e.g., materials like plastic, paper, or bioplastics) and cost. Prototyping and Testing :
- Creating prototypes of the products, testing for usability, durability, and functionality. This stage may also involve testing different materials to ensure the product performs well in different scenarios and usage occasions such as being leak-proof or microwaveable. Material Selection :
- Since disposable tableware is typically designed to be both cost-effective and environmentally friendly, industrial designers would carefully select materials that are both functional and sustainable, considering biodegradable or recyclable options when possible. CAD and 3D Modeling :
- Using computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed 3D models of the products. This would help to visualize the product and refine its features before it's made for manufacturing. Manufacturing Collaboration :
- Working closely with the engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure that the design can be mass-produced efficiently, cost-effectively, and at a high level of quality. Industrial Designer would need to understand the limitations and requirements of the production process. Sustainability Considerations :
- Explore ways to minimize waste and carbon footprint, possibly by integrating biodegradable materials or designing for recycling. Required Skills / Abilities Software :
- Mastery of CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or other modeling software) is critical for creating 3D models and prototypes. Prototyping Tools :
- Familiarity with rapid prototyping techniques like 3D printing or CNC machining. Material Knowledge :
- Understanding the properties and limitations of different materials, particularly those used in disposable goods, such as plastics, paper, or biodegradable alternatives. Sustainability Awareness :
- Knowledge of sustainable design practices and eco-friendly material options. Collaboration :
- Ability to work cross-functionally with marketing, manufacturing, and supply chain teams. Self Directed :
- Seek out new product opportunities in the consumer and foodservice markets and develop theoretical products to bring to market as well as existing product enhancements.
- Bachelors Degree in Industrial Design or equivalent
