Description
Reporting to the Director of the Law Library, the Assistant/Associate Director for Access and Collection Services provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the organization, maintenance, and discoverability of library resources in all formats. This position carries administrative and supervisory responsibilities and involves collaborating with other law librarians to develop, deliver, and expand library and access services for students and faculty. The role includes managing circulation, acquisitions, cataloging, interlibrary loan, and electronic resources, as well as supervising staff to ensure exceptional service delivery. The Assistant/Associate Director also oversees the Law School’s Digital Institutional Repository (Scholarship @ Hofstra Law), ensuring growth and accessibility. This is a full-time position, with a limited and negotiable hybrid work schedule.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Provides leadership for the organization, maintenance, and access to all library resources, both physical and electronic.
  • Supervises the processing of physical materials, circulation, interlibrary loan, document delivery, and access services functions.
  • Oversees cataloging operations, including collaborations with the University Library.
  • Oversees the management of electronic resources, ensuring access and system integrations.
  • Provides oversight for the Law School’s Digital Institutional Repository (Scholarship @ Hofstra Law), including content acquisition, metadata standards, and system enhancements.
  • Advises the Library Director on collection management, access services, and resource-sharing innovations.
  • Monitors the acquisitions budget and ensures fiscal responsibility in consultation with the Library Director.
  • Manages statistical and reporting functions related to library collections and services.
  • Serves as the law school’s expert in using the integrated library system, WorldShare Management Services (WMS), and ensures optimal system utilization.
  • Oversees a team of staff members and a professional librarian, promoting a collaborative and supportive work atmosphere.
  • Participates in strategic planning and aligns library goals with those of the Law School.
  • Collaborates with other law librarians to develop, provide, and expand library services and access services for students and faculty.
  • Responds to changing needs and priorities of a dynamic environment, demonstrating initiative and flexibility.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development through involvement in relevant associations and professional networks.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in library and information studies, knowledge management, or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution required.
  • Minimum of two years of supervisory experience.
  • Proficiency in integrated library systems, including catalog management, statistical reporting, and fund maintenance.
  • Knowledge of OCLC systems and cataloging standards.
  • Proficiency in electronic resource management, licensing, and troubleshooting access issues.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant applications.
  • Strong project planning, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication abilities.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a collegial environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to service excellence.
  • Able to apply effective problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills to improve processes and address challenges.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and grow professionally.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and experience with WorldShare Management Services preferred.
  • Knowledge of cataloging principles, metadata schemes, and emerging trends in library science.
  • Experience with interlibrary loan and document delivery services.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and support union staff effectively.

Salary/Salary Range
$95,000 - $120,000

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education. In addition to the salary offered, we offer a collegial and inclusive culture, and a benefits program which includes generous paid time off, paid holidays, tuition remission for employees and eligible dependents, and a retirement plan with University contributions.

  • Salary ranges indicated for positions covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement are in accordance with the CBA.
