Description

School of Health Sciences is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant / Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Mental Health Professions at Hofstra University. The Counseling and Mental Health Professions welcomes applicants with a degree in Counselor Education or relevant doctorates. This position is anticipated to begin Fall 2025.

The Counseling programs prepare students for professional practice as counselors who integrate developmental, cultural, wellness, and diagnostic knowledge with evidence-based skills and theory to promote the healthy and holistic development of individuals and groups they serve. The program strives to amplify voices of those who experience inequities and prepare students to advocate for social justice and engage in trauma-informed interventions in an increasingly diverse world. This mission is achieved through the construction of learning experiences where students navigate support and opportunities for growth that encourage them to become compassionate, reflective, culturally responsive, and critical practitioners in the pursuit of increased self-awareness, knowledge, and skill.

The Assistant / Associate Professor's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to :

  • Teach core courses in the CACREP-accredited counseling programs
  • Develop and / or continue a research agenda / scholarly activity in areas related to counseling, counselor education, or a related field
  • Demonstrate competence in teaching and maintaining innovative curricula
  • Advise and mentor graduate students
  • Willingness to take on leadership opportunities
  • Provide service to the department, school, university, profession, and community
  • Support efforts to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for faculty, staff, and students

Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in counselor education from an accredited program (preferably CACREP). Related doctoral degrees with full-time faculty experience in a counselor education program will also be considered.
  • A license in counseling or mental health counseling (or eligibility for licensure in the state of New York) is required (e.g., LMHC, MHC-LP, LPC).
  • Evidence of teaching experience (co-teaching and doctoral teaching internships are acceptable).
  • Evidence of experience as a counseling practitioner in mental health settings (doctoral internships are acceptable).
  • Achievement of publications and professional presentations or a readiness for a rigorous research agenda of developing grant proposals and publication pipeline.
  • Demonstrate evidence of counselor identity through scholarship, service, and advocacy; sustained membership in professional organizations; and commitment to professional development.
  • Successful candidates will have demonstrated a commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusivity.
  • Preferred Quals Summary

  • Preference will be given to candidates with an established record of teaching excellence, collaborative scholarly activity, mentoring students, supervising graduate students in practicum and internship course work in Mental Health Counseling or related counseling fields. Preferential candidates will have a history of working with behavioral healthcare and community groups.

  • as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education. In addition to the salary offered, we offer a collegial and inclusive culture, and a benefits program which includes generous paid time off, paid holidays, tuition remission for employees and eligible dependents, and a retirement plan with University contributions.
  • Salary ranges indicated for positions covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement are in accordance with the CBA.
