Qualifications :
Must hold or have the ability to obtain North Carolina Teacher Licensure OR
Must meet the qualifications for Residency Teacher Licensure
Must hold or have the ability to obtain EC Certification
Must have knowledge of curriculum
Must have knowledge of referral and placement procedures
Supervises :
Exceptional Children Teacher Assistant
Essential Job Functions :
Develops and implements an instructional plan which is compatible with the school and system wide curricular goals and the students' Individual Education Program.
Is responsible for the development of Individual Education Programs (IEP) for students with disabilities; implements the IEP; and uses diagnostic information obtained from tests, other assessment procedures and progress monitoring tools to update IEPs as needed.
Provides direct special education instruction to identified students.
Employs a variety of teaching methods to meet student needs. Implementation of these methods may require the adaptation or development of materials.
Creates Classroom Management Plans
Monitors student behavior; monitors behavior goals on IEP and progress on BIP; utilizes daily behavior intervention logs; maintains discipline in the classroom; deescalates inappropriate behaviors; teaches students appropriate behavioral strategies; restrains students when necessary; records and reports restrains.
Provides daily social skills instruction; provides opportunities for students to practice their newly acquired skills
Assists disabled students with their personal and self-help needs, such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks that the students are not able to perform by themselves.
Facilitates, develops and monitors FBA as needed
Monitors academic and attendance performance
Communicates with parents regarding their children's educational progress via periodic written progress reports
Acts as a case coordinator for assigned students; collaborates with community care- givers, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs
Maintains student records in accordance with North Carolina's Procedures Governing
Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities; and complies with state and federal education statutes
Treats all students in a fair and equitable manner, interacts effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and community
Performs all other duties as assigned
Physical and Cognitive Requirements :
The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Exceptional Children Teacher job classification within the Exceptional Children Program of Hoke County Schools. Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Use visual acuity in preparing and analyzing written or computer data
Visually inspect small defects and / or small parts
Operate a variety of machines, motor vehicles, hand, and job specific equipment and tools
Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
Observe general surroundings and activities
Communicate by spoken word to express or exchange ideas and convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly
Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment
Communicate effectively and efficiently, both orally and in writing
Establish positive relationships with students
Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
Perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations
Work with both children and adults with disabilities
Talk and hear : (Talking : expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words.
Hearing : perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
Lift students of various weights independently and with shared responsibility
